Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

I didn't realise the influx of PRs was that high. Just take a look at this - 30% of applicants under 1 km for MGS are PRs
http://www.mgs.sch.edu.sg/documents/000 ... .30add.pdf
Maybe there is some rationale to cap the number of PRs registering at each phase to 15 to 20%. If they go over the cap, they should ballot to get into the ballot! -
spikey,

Guess husband n me will not be doing PV duties in future. Have place in P1 then enrol, no then too bad... apply elsewhere.
Such as :scratchhead:Oppsgal:
So choose a volunteer job that got nothing much to do?
I guess possible easier tasks could be assisting teachers during excursion. But not really that 'eng' la, got to keep an active lookout for students assigned, bring them to toilet & make sure don't lose any students. Didn't try before but heard this was a popular PV duty, usually oversubscribed
Why do PV when already not enough time to rest after work? Maybe we not kiasu...
After all we parents are already paying school fees. Pay school fees still do free work for school? Don't make sense, ya? -

Not to bring kids to toilet but assist weaker students in the class...with more educated parents now, I believe they will be able to help the students...this will be useful for lower primary. If the school gets PVs to be teachers' assistants, cap it to a limit and make sure these PVs are a sure-in. Condition will be more than 40 hours.

Unfortunately all schools are feeling the PR pressure on the numbers of registrants! I think it's going to get worst as time goes by :scared:I didn't realise the influx of PRs was that high. Just take a look at this - 30% of applicants under 1 km for MGS are PRs

I wanted to continue volunteering in school but was told I have to pay a joining fee to continue as parent volunteer as my kids are already students in that school. I offered to work for free and yet I must pay to work for free

Honestly speaking, I think this system sucks… If I have got the moolahs, high chance is i will send my kid to overseas as international student to study instead of staying here… Since it does not matter if I am a SG citizen or PR, also do not have any exclusive priority…
-
citizen population is about 3 million plus
PR population is about 0.5 million
so the ratio of PR is about 1:7
I am amazed at how these 1/7 suddenly becomes the cause of over-subscription for Pri 1 places. It is not as if these 0.5 million suddenly appeared from nowhere. PR population has been around 0.3m and 0.4 m for a long time already. The squeeze in MRT and public transport are largely foreign workers who have no families here. Those domestic workers and work permit holders (construction workers / factory operators / domestic helpers etc) numbering a million plus has no family no children here.
If anyone does a proper analysis on the schools with most shortfall of places after yesterday, they will realise the main crunch is at the HDB estates where the ordinary singaporeans are.
Why doesn’t MOE increase the number of Pri 1 classes in the following schools ?
School / intake size / shortfall\t\t

CHIJ (Kellock)\t200\t-20
of the above list, NYPS is the largest with 390
why those HDB estates with high density are not having a larger intake ? lack of resources is a lame excuse because they have years to plan for it and relocate those resources -
