Lynnette:
A big Halo to all. I've just registered my GG @ CPS (P1 nxt yr). However, i know too little about the schl. Hope to get some tips from you all

hi lynnette!
:welcome:! my ds1 is in P2. he is having a whale of a time in CPS, and he enjoys going to school a lot. for that, i am very happy and satisfied with this choice.
I don't always know what happens in school, mostly just from his account, but so far he's been enjoying himself, so that should be good!

Lynnette:
i'm further from CPS than you. ds1 took school bus last yr, he got on about 7.15am. he'll reach school at about 7.35-40am though. slightly earlier than flag raising, and he will do silent reading or chat with his friends.
Im stying @ Bllk 266, not far frm CPS, however need to look for schl bus, hopefully GG dunnid to wake up too earli for the bus (normally she will wake abt 715am).Champion:
Hi Lynnette, A Big :welcome: to join KSP forum! :grphug:
My DD2 is going to P1 next year too; maybe both of our children will end up as classmates! :rahrah:
My DD1 is P3 this year with CPS
Where you residing? Does your GG need to take the school bus in future?
Btw, I heard frm my colleague tt there's no remedial lesson for P1 n 2, right? :xedfingers:
Oya, i heard tt the P is just posted there, really?
Last Fri went to reg there, n that's my very 1st time to step in the schl, like the schl environment so muchhhh. It's really a gd place for learning.
yes, the P is new. she started this Jan. I haven't met her personally. i think expatmom and LKVM has. champs?
cos i missed the PTM in Mar where she gave a speech. and LKVM also attended 1st day of school when P was there.
but she regularly writes letters to parents which I read faithfully.
so far so good.
with regards to you liking the sch env, :hi5:! i am happy the school allows the kids to run about and play during recess time. a friend of mine said her son's school didn't allow them to play soccer during recess and her son was so sad.
she was quite upset because she said boys are usually very active and for them to sit in class for such long hours, yet during recess they still don't allow them to play or run around, it is very hard for her boy to have fun or enjoy school this way.
my ds1 says he will eat his food quickly and join his friends. last yr they used to play around the eco garden. but recently, maybe because of Sg joining the Msia cup again, there has been soccer fever. he and his friends play soccer every recess now.
even when they don't have a ball, he said someone will make a paper ball or get plastic ball or something else to kick around.
i don't know if this means they're really noisy in school or cause more trouble, but it makes him look forward to school each day and he makes many more friends outside of his class this way. so i think it's great and hope the school won't suddenly change policy! -
hi lynnette! :welcome:! Maybe your GG will be the same class as mine.

kabalevsky, yes, confirm in...haha...orientation will be on 12 Nov @ 9am. Then they will let us know whether they will set up BASC or not.
I went to the YMCA BASC @ Blk 666A, i think we will more or less settle the kid there if CPS wont start their own BASC. Like the bright and clean environment. Kids can take nap (a super plus point for us!) and not so stress with additional assessment books (this is terrible for some BASC which claim to be academic focus), i just want my kid have a good rest and fun time after school.

i hope CPS can set up a good BASC though, cos we've heard quite a few express that they need this service and having it in sch is much more convenient esp since CPS location is a bit way in...
great to have you here, we will have livelier discussions here then!

so how many CPS kids are performing? her friends with her?
The whole CCA group is performing - about 30 of them from P2 to P5 or P6 - not too sure...And they will be performing on Monday in school for the National Day Celebration

Wow.. I can feel the warmth of your welcome! Thanks all. I'm still waiting for the confirmation letter frm schl. Will there be any test for kids on Orientation day? ( any experienced this before?) as i heard that there're lot of so called 'popular' schl this area test kids before assign them into respective classes.... **Wat a kiasu parent im

Found this website accidentally. http://www.einno.com.sg/ They are selling picture books, which i like to share with my GG every night before bedding.
kabalevsky: I'm so glad that schl are having silence reading, how i wish my GG learn to read SILENTLY..I always suspect that there'an itchy worms staying in her buttock, she nvr sit properly while doing reading.

My ds1 didn't have any test. They had an introduction to the teacher and classmates and a tour around the school on Orientation day. Then they did some activities in class with the teacher, no test.
I don't think it is a \"popular school\" practice though. It is just dependent on how the school wants to allocate classes. For schools that have P1 and 2 classes remain with the same classmates (follow-up system) so that the kids make longer lasting friendships and get more comfortable with each other, they don't have those tests and allocation is random.
For schools that practice some kind of banding or grouping based on performance, they will have diagnostic tests on Orientation day to sort or stream the kids.
I have friends whose kids are in neighbourhood schools who have the tests and also have friends whose kids are in popular schools that don't have the tests, that's how I conclude it's just the preference of the school or P.
As for differentiated learning, (in case you are worried that if your kid is very advanced, then random classes may not allow him to go at a faster pace compared to streamed classes), within the classes, they do try and group the kids according to ability.
There are 2 forms of groupings (oh dear, hope you find this useful instead of boring... cos I was also NIE trained, and learnt all these in NIE, just to share). We can group the kids based on ability for Math during math class. All the advanced ones can do more advanced sums based on the same topics when they are in group work. They work with similar ability classmates.
Then, on other occasions, when the teacher sees the need, they will fall in with the other groupings whereby there are 4 or 5 in a group and they are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The teacher will know which numbers are the strong ones. Which are weaker. The kids work together in their groups on problem solving and sums.
The stronger ones get to peer teach. They guide the weaker ones along. They learn better when they teach others, that's how they gain. The weaker ones learn from their peers how to do it. Some kids learn better when their peers teach them using their own language than if the teacher teaches them. So they also gain.
Sometimes the teachers call kids to answer Qs on the board by calling the numbers.
Ok, i am sure I haven't fully explained these grouping systems cos I learnt these over a long period of time and I am just briefly explaining them here. But I hope it helps explain that even in random classes, the kids can learn at their pace too, and there are benefits at lower primary levels with such arrangements.
At higher levels, streaming may be more beneficial, which is why most primary schools start grouping their students into streamed classes from Pr 3 onwards, including CPS.
Hope I didn't bore you to tears. :nailbite:

it's ok, she's still young. they all learn when they look at each other in school. they slowly learn to read silently.
my son will talk to his friends during silent reading too, but they are scared of their tr. so if tr scolds, they all surely read silently.
