My son don’t seem to be bothered by this so far. His class only has 5 boys. I always wonder why NJC appeal more to girls? Is HCI really that big of an attraction for top PSLE boys?

My son did not chose HCI because the color of the school look dull and boring to him. NJC appears to be more lively. That’s was his criteria back then.

But HCI has a longer history as a high school. Moreover, the A level result is still a big gap ahead of NJC.

I do not think it is a matter of NJC appealing more to girls, but rather more of a matter of preferred choice due to circumstances. Let's take year 2011 as an example.

For girls, the 2 girls' IP school RGS and NYGH all have COP>260. If girls get results between 257 - 260, they can only look for other co-ed IP schools. For some other races, DHS and RVHS which are SAP Chinese schools are not within their choice, so NJC is the next preferred choice.

For boys, RI COP is 259 and HCI is 257. If a boy gets 257, he will choose to go HCI instead of NJC, unless it is a case whereby they do not want to get in a Chinese school. Then again, there is another boy's school ACSI as well.

Based on this, and the fact that girls then to score better at PSLE, there seems to be a trend of imbalance in NJC. Nonetheless, I think NJC is a good IP school and worth considering for both boys and girls.

From what I read here, the ratio of boy : girl was 1:4 for 2010 cohort and 2:9 for 2011. Seems to be an increasing trend.

How do the boys feel being the minority in NJC ?
My boy is currently in awaiting his HAST test result for DSA.
My boy is not bothered by this. This means they know almost all the boys!

Ya, many pple look at academic results when deciding to go to which sch.

I am still thinking if I should write a complaint letter to HCI abt the way the students hoard the front of the public bus & refused to move into the rear to make more space for boarding passengers  Those from NYGH and MGS as well.

I am surprise top school students also like to hoard bus exit. Don't know why students everywhere like to hoard the bus exit way.

                  Hello

Just received information about boarding for JH1.

I was wondering if parents have any advice on what to do/bring etc (in addition to the list)?

Would appreciate if you can share your experience too.

                  Thank you.

Don't think you really need to bring anything in addition to the list. haha. Maybe should see what you can eliminate from the list instead.

                    1. Emergency Medications (vitamins, panadol, flu, stomach, diarhhoea, etc)
                    2. Shampoo, Shower, Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Cup + small pail
                    3. Floor wipes with the Holder & General Cleaning Wipes
                    4. Electric Fan (there's Ceiling Fan but still hot)
                    5. Extension electric plug
                    6. Electrical Outlet adaptors
                    7. Handphone or camera chargers, etc
                    8. Bowl/Fork/Spoon/cup in case they want to make their own supper/snack
                    9. Clothes for daily wear/sleep for 5 days
                    10. Uniforms for 5 days (there's laundry service in boarding)
                    11. Undergarments enough for 5 days.
                    12. Socks for 5 days
                    13. School Shoes
                    14. Sandals/slippers for wearing around boarding
                    15. Towels
                    16. Blanket, if don't like the furry one in boarding room
                    17. Pillow
                    18. Shallow rectangular plastic baskets to put inside cupboard so their undergarments and socks are not everywhere on the shelves inside the wardrobe(!!!).
                    19. Foldable Mesh Laundry holder (for them to put their dirty clothes before laundry) - usually hang this inside one of the wardrobes
                    20. ..... airfreshener/insecticide - spray plus those freshener-tubs to keep the room smelling fresh.
                    21. Laptop if needed
                    22. Musical instruments, if needed
                    23. School Bag with books/files

                    Anything to add?

Education is more than academic results - my personal opinion. Both my children could qualify for HCI and NYGH but we chose not to put them there ... we put them in schools which may not have better A level results than HCI .

We are more concerned with the wholistic education of our children...we look at the overall system which will bring out the best in my children and a nurturing environment which will mould them to be better individuals who will serve others and not merely self.

I am not saying that HCI does not fulfill this purpose ...it is just that we choose schools which suit my children better in their personality.

And they are enjoying their school life and 'blossoming' in their respective schools.

p/s - i am not the 'academic' kind of parent and i usually do not follow the 'crowd' ..I follow my 'heart' - i must qualify :imcool:

haha..and another piece of sensational news about their ex students in yesterday's papers ...no offence ...could be just coincidental ...

School culture is very important generally as a whole...In my interaction with all kinds of students in my church ... I can tell an ACS boy from a HCI boy from the way they carry themselves and a NYGH/RV girl from a MGS/SCGS girl too.

Just mere observations , not generalising in anyway. My friend's son who is from an unknown neighbourhood school can expreses himself way better than the RI boy who will graduate to be a doctor soon.

I am not 'bashing' any school ...we do not judge a school by its acadamic results alone nor do we judge a student by the school he or she goes to.JMHO
