ITE - Any parents from ITE ?

Hence, I believe that no matter where our kids goes to, they may also excel. It depends on how strong are their will power.

Hi! Maybe also to share my experience.

I did not go to ITE, went JC instead. Not because I did so well for \"O\", rather I did not qualify for Poly Biz Courses, and did not want to do Engin courses, so just went to a neighbourhood JC (by the way I came from a humble family background, Pri & Sec school were neighbourhood school who never produce scholars, and they are still neighbourhood schools now) who gave me a chance to work hard, finally I made it to NUS, but sad to say, Biz courses were out for me, got into my 3rd choice which was Arts & Social Sciences. Didn't get honours (At least you guys got it), got a govt job and now doing my master course.

Though I am not earning mega bucks, I think I am doing pretty fine with my current salary. Got a 5-rooms HDB flat, 2 beautiful kids and a cheap korean car.

I will not send my gal to a more well-known pri school (Unless it is my near my place. I am within 1 km from Nan Chiau Pri but may not want to send her there cos' no Students Care Centre in that school). I just want her to be happy, as what she is doing now, spending her time, happy learning and playing with her friends in this not-well-known childcare centre.

PS: usually for ITE kids who can make their way to Poly and then to higher levels, this breed of kids is with better life surviving skills / resilience as compared to those through train ones, meaning may excel much better than the latter and the sky is the limit...

I know of someone who never did well enough to qualify for any poly courses (save for nautical option) and chose private route over ITE. After getting his cert, he has been between a few jobs, trying out new things and not earning a high pay. Despite that, he still manage to give the parents a decent allowance and is pretty filial. He is now in another job switch (one that offers sponsored training) and preparing to get married. When i joked with him on why he thinks his girlfriend will marry a poor guy, his reply is,
\"Because I'm a cockroach. Buey Si (ie not easy to die)\".

It's good that your academic journey is 'bumpy' as if one day your child's journey is also as 'bumpy', usually you will be able to empathise and give her a pat on her shoulder to move on coz the road ahead is just full of all kinds of possibilities!

Hi! Actually, whenever I look back, I think I have a pretty smooth academic journey, don't find it \"bumpy\" at all as I was fortunate to make it to Uni without much obstacles. So my academic story is a pretty boring one compared to those news reported about students who show perserverance and determination though encounter obstacles and difficulties.

I missed registering for ITE due to family problems, went to pte instituition & self-sponsered for SHATEC course.

Spend 5yrs in hospitality industries & got a wake-up call when I lost my mother & maternal grandfather within 1 week. Switched back to regular hours. Got a full time job & did part-time studies. I must admit I have not found my calling YET after having worked in a variety of industries.

My latest job now is a SAHM after failing to get a job but my goal is to be a source of inspiration to my kids especially my DS who is not academically but artistically inclined. I intend to motivate & inspire him by completing my professional diploma. I want to show him that if Mummy can do it, so can You.

No one is a Born Loser only a Strong or Weak Trekker.

One of my subordinates studied in ITE previously, and after graduating, he went on to study diploma in Ngee Ann. He is a keen and fast learner. In fact, the fact that he went on to Ngee Ann after graduating from ITE was one of the reasons why I employed him, because I have high respect for people who constantly strive to improve themselves.

He is strong with numbers, and I am trying to develop him further in this area.

So, don’t lose heart. Every path leads to something bright. It’s how you seize the opportunity.

Interest and inclination is very important for a person to do well in his/her chosen field. I hope parents don’t force their children to choose fields that their child is not interested in or has no inclination.


I was in the commerce stream throughout my secondary and JC days (back then, it’s either science, arts or commerce stream). I hated every subject that I studied, especially in JC. I have no inclination for numbers, yet I was doing economics and principles of accounts! The day I finished my last paper in the A levels, I swore I’d never touch those subjects again. As expected, I did badly for my As; only managed to get partial As. All my friends went on to University. A lot of them are successful accountants and financial controllers now.

I only found my true calling after working in the field of education. Got my diploma and degree in my 30s and my masters in my 40s. All were related to education. I topped my cohort for both my degree and masters course. For the first time in my life, studying was a breeze! I read beyond what were required of our assignments because of the interest I had.

I may not be earning big bucks now, compared to my friends in the accounting field, but all the employers I’ve worked for hold me in high regard. I have the flexibility to do part-time work for all my current and ex-employers if I want to. And they were also willing to accede to my terms. Most important, I’m very happy doing what I’m doing now. I guess I’ve finally found my talent and strengths and this is my contribution to society.

He’s currently in the NT. just like to confirm if he’s from NT means he will have to go to NITEC then Higher NITEC is it ? how many years will this take pls? can anyone adv pls ? tks

Hi fluffie,

Students from NT usually go through NITEC first, then if their overall grades & GPA are good they may proceed with Higher NITEC.
- All Nitec courses are of two-year duration, except for Nitec in Service Skills and Nitec in Beauty Therapy which are of one-year duration.
- All Higher Nitec courses are of two-year duration, except for Higher Nitec in Paramedic & Emergency Care and Nitec in Nursing (Dual Certification Course) which is of 3-year and 3-month duration.

Perhaps you may want to go through with your son which intake he wants to start and the list of courses that may interest him, be it from the Schools of Business & Services, Engineering, Design & Media, Health, etc.
