Ya. It's called English Lang Arts. Combination of English and Literature. My dd's sch is doing that too. They do have English Compre, vocab ex, etc. These are printed by the tr, sometimes, the students download them. -
Under the IB system, english lit replaces english for both standard and higher level. For A-level, all MOE Humanities scholars must attempt english Lit at H2 level.

I hope the decision makers are still working on this and reading the inputs here.
I would like to add the following observations about schools in Australia and NZ for decision makers to ponder over. Please use our reserves wisely and effectively to nuture OUR young :

My sentiments exactly. Just baffle me how we can spend so much money giving out scholarships to foreigners while doing so little for our own children. I believe every child has the potential to succeed, even if it's not in the traditional areas via the university route.2ppaamm:
....
Where have our taxes gone? Even in the independent schools where the kids are equality high in abilities, we are looking at 40 per class, and facilities that are shared with a thousand others. Sad.
There is much to learn from our neighbours down south and other true first world countries. What are all those reserves for, if we don't nurture our young, whether they are our brightest, or they need our special assistance to make it. Surely, with our resources, we can turn even our most academically challenged kids to great economic contributors through a more embracing education. Our system has gone too lazy and fat to do these things, by simply claiming and making everyone believe that our education system is the best in the world without solid proof, and forcing everyone to conform or succumb or leave. -

Thanks for converging these topics. After reading all these threads, I have been thinking about my kid’s education path considering that we may decide not to put her through the pressure cooker system. Just let her enjoy her primary school life in a not so results-driven school. Send her abroad after her O level. -

Yeah... seems like a good option eh? And since Singapore seems to embrace foreign talent, that education could well stand them in good stead in the local job market.Pixiedust

Not the best option (very costly) but I have to be realistic. Understand our kid's personality, strengths and weaknesses and give her the environment that will best nurture her. Let's hope your petition is being noted and friends in high places are doing something as you earlier mentioned.

1amber, no problem. I see your point too as a fellow parent with child already in the system. However, I am hoping our policy makers will learn from these other countries so that future generations of SG parents can plough the money back into our own country/universities.

Pixiedust,
completely agree. After all, it is the taxpayers money that we want to see put to good use for our country. However, in my opinion, it is about whether policy makers have the heart to serve their people rather than whether they have the knowledge/mind to do something. They have sent teams all over the world to study best practices. So many things in our country are imported - from pork to ERP system. We have very brilliant technocrats running our country - the people with high Ds and high Cs in their personality profiles. There is nothing they don’t already know. No offence meant to those high flying officers reading this. I am just an ordinary mother doing my best to carve out a future for my only child. -
My goodness, they are listening BUT about rugby, hence, no more contact rugby for primary school, to the dismay of many parents, coaches, and children who are involved.
It really makes me wonder - should I have faith in them.
