Around the nearby vicinity there’s Bendemeer Pri, Farrer Park, St Andrews. St Marg is further away. All depends on which side of the km one is looking from.

No comments on the other school as in this area cos no knowledge.

Hi all! My hubs is an old boy of Hong Wen, may i know if he still needs to join Alumni for Hong Wen or can just register under 2A2? I hv not heard much of Hong Wen before until lately when i start doing some research for our DD who was borned in 09. 🙂

May i know what are the strengths of this school, other than it is a SAP school and rich in Chinese Culture? Appreciate your inputs, many thanks! Meanwhile congrats to all those who have gotten in, and best of luck to those who are balloting this Fri!! 😉

            hi jazzychloe,

As long as your hubby can produce his old report book/cert showing he studied at HWS bfore, your child will qualify for registration under Phase 2A2. Joining alumni will let you register 3 days in advance under 2A1.

As for what the strengths are, I think beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder - it depends on what you are looking for.

So far, I’m happy with what the school has offered. The facilities are very new and it’s single session. DS1 enjoys additional calligraphy and chinese musical instrument classes during curriculum time. There is some emphasis on the importance of reading (chinese and english). the workload is pretty alright (but homework is teacher dependent).

Thanks for ur reply hquek! 🙂

So doesn't matter whether he's alumni or not rite, cos will definitely still hv vacancy for 2A2 rite?

I'm also looking for a school with good moral and character building, but the academic part is also impt. So far how r the psle results and the passing rate?

HWS is not affiliated to any sec sch rite? Which sec schs do the students frm HWS normally go to? And they dun offer Tamil or Malay as 2nd language, meaning mostly are Chinese students?

Frm what i knw, although during my hubs time it is still not a SAP sch but i find that my hubs is quite strong in terms of some chinese values and culture which he strongly advocates even until now lol. Can even call him \"old school\" too lol... :rotflmao:

                Hi jazzychloe,

Yes, non-alumni will qualify under 2A2. And yes, HWS prides itself on character building. On academics, personally and very seriously speaking, it’s up in the air. The psle scores are not amongst the highest in the land but I personally feel that the best is yet to be.

Why? becos the current few batches of psle and to be psle are from the old facility where HWS wasn’t THAT popular (it was popular but not as ‘hot’ as now) and there apparently are lotsa kids from unprivileged background - that somehow translates into academics not being so strong. So I’m not using the next few psles as the barometer of how well they do academically.

But nowadays, I see more parents being concerned about their kids and willing to do PV to get the kids in. I see for my P1 that there are pushes to get the kids to read (both eng and chinese story books) and I feel this is a great way to get the kids to improve their literacy. they have other activities during recess times - like quizzes etc that I find is pretty fun and helpful.

In HWS, kids take higher chinese. I’m not sure if/when they are allowed to drop it. Malay and Tamil are not offered. Not too clear on where most of the kids end up - I just know where I want mine to be (life is filled with hope right?).

And my friend’s bro was from HWS and he strongly advocates pp sending their kids there. I do like that kind of spirit - that school bonding thingy.

They have capped already. For the past 2 years, more PV applicants more than PV allocated.

Note. There were unknown factor at play this year such as increase among Heng Hua and Grassroot leaders.

School is aware and they are reviewing the system.

But even for these past couple of years, there are still spaces left over after 2B. I think they are doing ok. though not sure if there has been a spike in number of pp doing PV.

I have met however, pp who hope to get into HWS, but arent’ doing anything about it - except probably submitting their applications during Phase 2C…then they come and complain. Sigh…
