Gin, I've just been kay pohing around P1 assessment books to see what is expected. But everytime I look at them, I get a panic attack! I don't even dare to look at the higher primary school ones, I'm sure I can't even do it myself :nailbite: Now I am beginning to wonder how I even managed to survive my O levels and A levels maths since I can't even do primary school maths :scratchhead:Hi Everyone!
I am back.... Wow! michyms you are well equipped with the P1 syllabus :)! Real up to date :).
P1 syllabus isn't so tough. Wait till you see the syllabus of the older students :(. However, like it or not, most students can manage, of course, most do it grudgingly. (It is certainly good to know that MCS is at least a place where the teachers care for their students.)
I have applied for exemption from Mother Tongue for DD2. I wonder when I will get confirmation for that. I will try to make primary school years as enjoyable as I can for her. She can take her 2nd language in Secondary School, as far as I am concern. I will take whatever steps necessary to make sure that my girl has a life! Crazy system here in Singapore. Not in favour of 'high pressure' cooker style of living here.
I know of friends (from Malaysia) whose son is working in the banking sector in Singapore. He does not speak a word of dialect, does not speak any foreign languages, no Malay, only English. He was already earning more than a million Ringgit a year, that was 2 years ago. My point here is not about the money, my point is, that those friends of mine let their children (2 boys) enjoy themselves, grow up happy and well-adjusted to society, and excel! That young chap of 27 years old is now happily married and still having a good time in Singapore. Of course, the parents there had a choice, here in Singapore, not much of a choice is there for parents? Whatever is done out of compulsion is never fun. Parents are often seen as 'slave drivers' by their children. Parents 'driving' their children to work, work, work and children fighting back by ignoring their parents after a while. When the children see their parents, they see 'work'. Believe me, I have students who prefer that their parents to be at work so that the parents won't be at home 'driving' them to work! Sad, but true.
My DD1 enjoyed her schooling in the international schools that she attended. She is very much an all rounder person, of which I am most happy about. Able to think out of the box, creative and generally a people person. She is working now. She is a graduated as a Communicative Designer but after working for about 5 months with a German company here, she realized that she cannot see herself sitting behind a desk for 6 days a week, just doing design. We, as parents, encouraged her to go explore different lines of work. And now, she is working as a Personal Trainer :). We are all happy to see that she is happy working out and getting in shape. And her clients love to chat and work out with her, as I said, she is a people person and she does genuinely care for people.
Ok, got to go for now. DD2 had her tonsils removed yesterday pm. So, giving her extra, extra TLC :).
Hope your dd gets an exemption. I have another friend who applied for an exemption because she only returned to SG when the son is P2 (she had been in Oz and Canada for 6 years).. and she managed to get it! Great that your dd1 has benefited much from the overseas exposure, and agree that the best way forward is to encourage the kids to find their own interesting and footing. In SG, we toe a thin line between letting them enjoy childhood and pushing them academically. So it's up to us parents to keep the balance in check and hopefully do well with that! -

I am very sure you can handle the Maths sums easily. All you need to do is go through the Maths Coursebooks - one chapter at a time, Get Maths Intensive Drills Workbook 1 from Popular Bookstore and you go through the work one chapter at a time. You can do it! :). Just make sure that when it comes to Models, do it diligently, no short cuts. If you ever need any help, just let me know, I can show you how it is done and then you can teach your DD :). -

Does anyone know how the after-school pick-up with private cars work? I drove past the school last week. I saw some cars parked along the double yellow lines outside of the school. Are we allowed to drive in to pick up our DDs? -

Hi Gin… you need to apply for car label ( $6 per car per year)… then you are allow to drive into the school. The cars park at the yellow lines is because the car park is full at MCS and they have to allow the school bus to leave before the cars is allow to go in to pick up the children
