      Hi buds,

Thanks for your advice….Ya, I am slowing down the pace and hopefully it will become easier along the way as they gain maturity in their development…

Actually the method you have described for addition is similar to what I have taught them….like the bigger number in your stomach (like eat up more biscuits), and the smaller number on the fingers, and then counting forwards. But my elder gal has the tendency to start counting from 1 which obviously doesn’t work when the number gets bigger (like more than 20). So think she needs more familiarization with the number sequence….but when I randomly ask her ‘xxx is xx years old this year, next year how old will she be?’, she can get it for the first few times, then when I ask her more, she doesn’t want to answer me anymore…BIG learning attitude….

I also have the same question as laughingcat…how to transition from using fingers to mental calculation if the child is not learning abacus? It seems to come more naturally for some kids than others (like when I compare my younger one with her jie jie)

BTW, they had their first Math enrichment class at MMI last Saturday. I had a look at the workbook which is supposed to cover the topics for 10 lessons. From simple counting, odd/even numbers, it covers place values all the way to the thousands, and also the hundreds chart at the end. At home, I had only introduced them to mainly tens and a bit of hundreds…is the pace of the enrichment class too fast? Just to recall, they are turning 4 next month…

          Hi,

Just chanced upon this thread, can I ask what are the diploma courses for montessori, it for teachers or for us parents? My niece needs a lot of help in reading and her parents feel that they need to do a lot of coaching at home as well but do not know how to. I am wondering if these diploma courses will help?

            Hi Laurenwkids

The diploma course are for teachers as well as parents. It is about 1 yr course where you will have to do assignments etc and sit for an examination. After that u will be awarded a Diploma.

But if you are only interested in doing Homeschooling for yr kids and also to teach students at home or as an Enrichment then you can just join the
            Mathematics or Phonics course .

Here is the the link to the courses

                      Hi guys

need your advice - i'm planning to send my girl to Pat's school house for K1 but chanced upon this thread and am pretty intrigued by what you have shared about the montessori approach. am wondering if i should send my girl to a montessori school instead?

                      hi blueroti,
did you see the Pats' schoolhouse thread in KSP forum too? you can ask parents there about the center you are interested in. and then visit the school as well.

as for Montessori, you can also visit a few schools and read up some. see which would be better for your beliefs and for your girl. different strokes for different folks.

for me, i sent my ds2 to Pats'. You can find me at that thread too.

but for my dd, i am sending to Montessori. it's just about personal preference and what fits/ suits your child best, i feel.

Both curricula/ principles are good, in my own opinion.

                        hi kabalevsky

thanks very much for your reply. i have checked out the Pat’s school house thread too. i have only gone down to Pat’s Raffles centre which is their new centre next to Raffles hotel. didn’t really like the place coz’ it’s an enclosed area.

as for montessori, when i google, i found so many schools with different permutation using the montessori names. it’s only when i read this thread then did i realise it’s coz’ they are operated by different people but what’s similar is that they adopt the montessori teaching method. i’m not familiar with the montessori method tho so guess you’re right, i will have to chk out the schools before deciding.

but if i may ask - why did u send your dd to montessori and ds2 to pat’s? is it to try both curricula? thanks much!
