Cos she dun have to do any volunteer work! do you know that mummies who wants to register for Tao Nan and Ai Tong have to fight to do volunteer works for over 80 hours in order to get the recommendation letters from SHHK? Some mummies even tried to do 100 hours and all just for the recommendation letters to go into phrase 2b. As a TV cast, she still can say i dun have to do volunteer work! I think quite unfair to those poor mummies who work so hard.

So you are now saying SHHK is being unfair?

looking at the post, then i feel i must have been terribly stupid to go and volunteer since we are always warned by those doing the volunteering parents that this will increase our chance

I think the primary condition is the membership tenure... ie the longer you join SHHK, the higher the chance you will get the recommendation letter... Volunteering will help to score more point if the membership tenure is the same... For my case, I've joined SHHK for 2 years and have volunteered for 50 hours but I did not get the letter whereas my neighbour joined SHHK for 10 years (even before he got married) and volunteered 0 hour and he got the letter... and I was told the reason is my membership tenure is too short compared to the rest.

I think we need to get the facts right before we jump into any conclusion. Zoe Tay’s son got into Henry Park through phase 2A, no dispute on that, it is according to MOE’s policy.

As for Vivian Lai, maybe it was her husband that is the SHHK member, and he was the one that did volunteer work?

They are both mothers afterall, and want the best for their kids, just like all of us…

For those of you who are wondering about SHHK membership and the criteria for getting the recommendation letter, I know for a fact that apart from the publicly stated criteria of tenure of membership, what really matters is your ‘connections’ to the powers in SHHK.

There are people who have gotten recommendation letters with tenure membership of 2 years or less but have done zero hours of volunteer work because they know the powers in SHHK. Things have gotten harder in the last few years but definitely a few years ago, even people who sign up as SHHK member on the eve of P1 registration can get letter. So it is not surprising that Lai Yi Ling can get letter.

I am just highlighting this so that parents who are counting on getting SHHK letter should be aware that there is a lot of uncertainty going down this route unless you know the powers in SHHK.

Going down the PV route or community leader route is more certain. But one must be prepared to put in physical hours without a guarantee that you will succeed in the ballot and I believe all SHHK schools except NC had to ballot for within 1 km in P2B this year.

                  KSP:
She and her husband failed to get son enrolled in brand-name school, despite volunteering 80 hours. But now, it seems the six-year-old may be enrolling in his father's alma mater - Henry Park Primary School.

Phrase 2A in Henry park is good enough wat, why need to pv in Nanyang :scratchhead:

The way the whole issue is being presented seems to make HPPS a 2nd choice, a 'not as good school' as the 'top' NYPS. Hmmm .... Anyway, being in a better than average school is only the beginning of a long learning journey. How well a child does really depends on a lot of other factors. So, really, we as parents should not get carried away. 🙂
