Seriously, I also don't understand what the fuss is about? maybe it's becos she's from PAP? Everyone makes mistakes, live and let live.

What the fuss is about? hmm....

A \"leader\" having no respect for the nation/national anthem..

      Trivial?

Well.. if People are having the impression that Singapore is owned by PAP, then indeed it is trivial.. coz they can do what they like. If not, then the MP better show some respect and discipline.

      ----------------

A \"Leader\", after being caught showing no respect for the nation, tries to hide and cover up by deleting posts and comments on her FB fanpage..

      Trivial?

That depends whether you agree that a leader should behave this way w/o accountability and willingness to acknowledge their mis-conducts..

      -----------------

A Leader must lead by example.. Showing no respect for the national anthem is showing no respect for the nation, somemore on national TV.. With so many foreigners on our land, the MP is a disgrace..A leader cannot even behave/stay still when the national anthem is being played.

Even peasants know they should stand still when at the scene where the anthem is being played.

I think it's because many people are currently unhappy with the PAP. While there used to be some degree of political apathy, due to the elections in May and with the presidential elections just around the corner, Singaporeans have become more aware of domestic politics.
no leh.. majority of 60% still likes them..

Poor girl (I mean the foreigner who commented)... Many new citizens compare Singapore with their country of origin and they cannot understand why we are so hard on our politicians. In some countries in South East Asia, a powerful politician can send a hitman out to shoot someone he doesn't like and NOTHING will happen to him and NO ONE will dare to complain about him. Compared to politicians like that, Penny is an angel.

I am not trying to condone what Penny did. After all, did not all of us grow up in school being taught to say the pledge and sing the anthem at full attention? BUT, there seems to be a massive over reaction here....

Thank you my dear. My sentiments exactly.

An MP was texting during National Anthem, and suddenly we have a witch hunt. I mean, she has apologised, so what else do we want from her? Quit her post? Take her kids out of school? We are approaching the voyeuristic extremes of the UK tabloids, and guess where that ended up?

:goodpost: to both 3Boys & Chenonceau

All those gratuitously casting stones at her on the internet, when they were sitting down in front of their TV sets during the parade, did they stand up when the National Anthem was being played? How many of them zipped off the Malaysia for the long weekend instead of staying around to celebrate National Day?

            Hyp...... with a capital H.

Those who served NS or attended school would know that if you're at the scene (i.e. All those who ATTENDED the NDP), you are supposed to stay still when the anthem is being played. This is respect.

For whose who did not attend the NDP, there is no such practices/requirements. No one is ever going to talk about a minister who does not stay still in his house or on the road when the anthem is being played. C'mon, you don't expect pedestrians crossing the road to stop halfway in the middle of the road just bcoz the anthem is being played miles away right?

Please look at the issue in context.

She is AT the PARADE and the National Anthem is being played and She is supposed to sing and stand at attention. And she is a leader, a people's representative (Elected MP), a role model.. (who mis-behaved).

I feel most of the criticism against her is valid and justified.

And for those who criticized her online, I believe many would have stand at attention and keep still IF they are AT the PARADE itself…

If they have managed to get the tickets… that is…

I’m guilty as charged. I did not stand at attention while the national anthem was played over my television at home while watching NDP. But I did keep a respectful silence and watched with pride the proceedings over tv as the national anthem was sung.

If I were at the National Day Parade, it would have been a different story. I would have stood at attention and proudly sung the anthem loud and clear. I would have resisted the urge to take my handphone out of my pocket to text or read SMSes.
