I personally feel that one way for children to master speaking Mandarin is to first watch lots of Chinese children drama series. Can anyone recommend any titles? I am not referring to cartoon but dramas series by real life actors.

My kids and i recently got hooked on taiwan drama 爱

Though it's not a children's show, the contents are actually quite healthy and the chinese spoken are proper and good -- unlike local dramas. Even my K2 dd can understand the plot. I also find the pace of this show just right, not too fast like HK dramas.

Dramas like 大长今 also good for kids, except young kids may find it difficult to understand due to the traditional korean setting

            Dear Mummies,

I called the school again after gotten good responses.

I am regret that the school decided not to sell the resources to public. The orientation is cancelled. They have their concerned.

Mummies, you may look for alternatives.

I found out that Yuquan does has the 4000 chinese words which using this approach.

Luckily I have not applied for leave. That's really quite unprofessional of Poi Ching School to handle this matter this way. They should not have made promises they can't fulfil.

                  Dear Mummies,

                  My apology.

The school suggested me to form a group when i told him i am very interseted on the materials. The guy willingly to guide us along.

Immediately i started the forum. After gotten good feedback, i called the school again. He ate his words. I was quite mad.

Anyway, there are many alternatives out there.

The sch probably realize later that they are bound by commercial/copyright terms. I’m not really surprised cos my exp dealing with teachers is that quite a number of them are very clumsy with it comes to dealing with admin matters or handling parents’ enquiries. Perhaps it’s becos they’ve never worked in offices and business environment before.

Nevertheless, really appreciate ur help in trying to share tis with us. I might visit yuquan one of these days to find out more, will share here if i find out anything.

I think we have to be fair to the school also. This is their 'secret weapon\" to attract students to their school, why must they share with the public? This will not be fair to their current students too. I think the teacher who promised to sell this to the public is a bit naive and did not get approval from the school.

Anyway, learning chinese language is not about how many words you know. It is about how to use them and I do not think that we need 4,000 words in daily life. If you know 1,500 words and know how to use them well, I think it is far better then knowing 4,000 words and don't know how to use them. Just my 2 cents .... :celebrate:

My son is in P5 now and is doing badly in chinese. What this teacher say here is absolutely true for him :

                        但华文教师经常感叹学生对华文课没有兴趣,不爱看华文书。我们认为问题出在学生的识字量太低。”她说,小学生必须学的2000字分散在六年学习,小一只识116字,完成小二教育时只识600字,这样的识字量,基本上是无法让学生广泛阅读,更别说写作。

When i realize his chinese std is dropping low in p4, it's way too late. I tried to encourage him to read story books, but it's tough. There are so many characters he couldn't recognize -- strange that most words in textbooks he can recog though 😞 If i get him books that he can read by himself, the story is usually too childish, on the other hand, books with contents mature enuf for him, he couldn't understand.

I'm actally thinking if this can help him, not just for my K2 dd. Sch grades aside, my personal goal for my kids is that they should be able to read widely and gain knowledge from reading books. It would be my life regret if they can't achieve that. To me, if they can't read a chinese book, there's no difference from being a 文盲
