All About Preparing For Primary One

Mine is K2, going P1 next year.
So I m not too sure how is school will be like for her next year onwards.glendt:

My girl is 9. She is not that busy in school yet. If she is too free, her mind also not being developed so I rather she be busy. But only if she can cope. So far, she says she can cope. How old is your child? -
in fact from the example listing of enrichment lessons at Magdalene kindergarten and Newton kindergarten, you can gauge for yourself have a rough idea:-
a) which are the key, fundamental lessons a child ought to go for, and
b) which are the good to have optional meaningful ones for a kid.

Btw, any mothers here with kids graduate from Pat’s Schoolhouse?
If yes, do you think Pat’s prepare their students well for P1? Their classes end at 5pm Mon till Friday, so it’s difficult to squeeze in anymore preparatory classes for P1 (I don’t arrange any enrichment classes on weekends which is reserved for family outing). -
I see, when my girl was in K2, I started her on LCentral then after that, in P1, I started her on TLL. She enjoyed going to these classes so it was all right. After a while, I stopped LCentral and then when I knew that compo was a more important part of her learning, I put her in TAS as well. Now she has English lessons and Chinese lessons. She also goes for Math classes. For science, I am guiding her. I have cut down on some of her more fun enrichment lessons like art lessons. She is not that good in it anyway so she did not really enjoy those lessons.

Mine were not from Pat’s but a close friend of mine put her dd at Pat’s. In her opinion, it did not really prepare her for P1. Pat’s was good in getting her dd to be more confident and to speak up and she really enjoyed going to school. But she realized that her dd could not really read and write well so needed extra help before she started P1. -

If kid is reading more and wide, there should not be any issue with grammar and vocab. It is better to pick up grammar and vocab thru' reading, than to have to be \"taught\" to remember. Things that are formally taught need to be enforced many times before the kid can remember. Things that are learned thru their own exposure will be inculcated in them and comes to them very naturally. Language should be such. This is just my humble opinion.you should !
because ICR only cover reading only.
P1 Preparatory course cover two subjects - both English and Maths. An hour each for 1 subject
P1 Prep English cover grammar, vocabulary targeted at P1 standard.
when your child reach K1/ K2, good to send them for P1 Prep course.

Just sharing what we have been doing. My DD is in an international school. We are not quite sure her of academic standard because there are neither tests nor homework. She has been a shy and reserved girl so we decided to put her in an international school to allow her to build confidence in public speaking as she roughs it out with children of different nationalities and in a broader age range. Initially I was concerned that she would be afraid of such a big school with big boys and girls but it turned out very well. In fact she enjoyed it. She is so much better now and I believe the environment had helped.
She has been going to S&D and English Enrichment at Lorna Whiston since 3 years ago. The rest are fun stuff just to expose her and see her inclination e.g. ballet, art, gym, tennis, shichida. Piano and swimming at home (happened that swim teacher also teaches piano so we do it together).
She very happy with Lorna Whiston (great teachers) and art (her main interest). We have cut down shichida (she likes but mummy hates sitting on the low chairs), tennis (the operator closed shop), and gym. She still wants to revive shichida
. For gym and ballet we think we have to find a suitable centre and teacher to revive her interests. By end 2012 we will have to reduce those fun stuff due to lack of time.
We have been doing intermittently Kumon activity books maths and english. Reading english books is going on nightly for now but we are watching her mandarin. At the moment her school is doing a great job.
To help overcome her shyness, we have been making her pay at cashier counters and ask for tables at restaurants since last year.
After reading through the threads, have decided to implement regular time and place for studies asap. Also buck up my own discipline to get her to stick to schedule. Getting DH to help.
Each year we have already been encouraging her by saying positive things about going to the next level of education. I believe that had helped to ease the anxiety of new classmates and teachers.
I nearly fainted reading the earlier posts but hope I am doing enough for the moment

the standard of kindergarten and child care centres in SG varies from one another. Some kindy prepare kids well for P1, but other kindy not sufficient. The standard varies.
moreover, P1 standard is getting higher and higher, each year.
that is why some parents still prefer to send kids for P1 Prep course.
if you think you come from a kindy where then standard is reasonable, then ok. -

Primary school education is getting more and more scary. I find myself breathless trying to catch up. The maths problems seem to get harder even from 1 year ago. The race used to start from P3, now from P1, parents are already getting the children to do heuristics, write creative writing, do science experiments! -

Are there any parents who have not sent their K1 kids to academic type of enrichment class yet? Currently, my DS has swimming and piano on weekends. With only these 2 classes, DH and I are already finding it a chore and time consuming.
Hi dimsum,
DS3 is doing sports like soccer and swimming and learning drums. Dont intend to go for enrichment classes if he can cope with Primary school work next year. Time is a big constraint and dont want to stress him up with so many classes and extra homework at such an early age. Let him smell some roses (or kick some balls first) before the rat race starts. I suppose you have accumulated enough experience from your 1st 2 kids to know what's best for your DS3.
