the standard of kindergarten and child care centres in SG varies from one another. Some kindy prepare kids well for P1, but other kindy not sufficient. The standard varies.
moreover, P1 standard is getting higher and higher, each year.
that is why some parents still prefer to send kids for P1 Prep course.
if you think you come from a kindy where then standard is reasonable, then ok. -

Primary school education is getting more and more scary. I find myself breathless trying to catch up. The maths problems seem to get harder even from 1 year ago. The race used to start from P3, now from P1, parents are already getting the children to do heuristics, write creative writing, do science experiments! -

Are there any parents who have not sent their K1 kids to academic type of enrichment class yet? Currently, my DS has swimming and piano on weekends. With only these 2 classes, DH and I are already finding it a chore and time consuming.
Hi dimsum,
DS3 is doing sports like soccer and swimming and learning drums. Dont intend to go for enrichment classes if he can cope with Primary school work next year. Time is a big constraint and dont want to stress him up with so many classes and extra homework at such an early age. Let him smell some roses (or kick some balls first) before the rat race starts.
I suppose you have accumulated enough experience from your 1st 2 kids to know what's best for your DS3.

the reason why kindergarten can’t set too high a standard is because … they don’t want a situation whereby some kids can’t manage, and fail.
dun forget - there are kids with learning difficulty also enrolled in kindergarten. If the kindy set the standard too high, these kids may possibly fail in Nursery N2, or even fail at K1, or fail at K2. They are then asked to repeat N2 / K1 / K2.
The Principal of a kindergarten would not want to see such thing happening because … can you imagine the morale & confidence level of a young kid being eroded at such a young, tender age ? This is very bad. Hence, in order to accomodate to the needs of all kinds of kids enrolled into a kindy, the standard set cannot be too high. It has to be much simpler … so that every kid can take it, can manage somehow. -

because ICR only cover reading only.
P1 Preparatory course cover two subjects - both English and Maths. An hour each for 1 subject
P1 Prep English cover grammar, vocabulary targeted at P1 standard.
when your child reach K1/ K2, good to send them for P1 Prep course.

Yeap. When she started nursery we had to deal with her shyness and refusal to speak to teachers. Now that we have solved that problem, we have to work on the academics. We have been having many discussions concerning our DD. We are now of the position that based on her personality profile, we would want to allow her to be an average student in an average school. Get to a poly and then try a uni either here or distant learning. If we can afford then send overseas. However, the new 4th uni gave us a glimmer of hope that our country may offer more options to students. I am an old mummy so have no energy to sit her through so much assessment books and homework. -

you are right. When i saw the PSLE exam qns at Popular bookshop, i got a shock! These days, the kids really learning so much … esp. the upper primary Science and the Maths! They cramp so much into the P4-P6 curriculum. It is a far cry from our ancient dynaseur days.
because of the high standard starting right from P1, as each year pass by, actually what the P1 kids are doing now is equivalent to our old P3 days donkey years in the past. In other words, somehow over the years, they had brought down the P3 standard to P1 now. Now if a P1 kid go to school can’t read, it’s dead meat! -

Thanks for your nice compliment, but i no guru.
In fact, i had learnt a lot from experienced mommies who had gone before me, and i am still learning. There’re still so many things ahead i need to learn.
btw, strange thing about this ‘P1 Prep course’ is that i realize … a number of Montessori kindergarten have already incorporated this as part of their K2 curriculum. I’m not sure about the Montessori childcare centre environment, bec ccc come under the control of MCYS.
but quite a number of Montessori kindy, Yes. So if your kid is currently attending Montessori kindy, you may casually ask your child’s form teacher or P - when they going to start this ‘P1 Prep course’, at K2 ? See how they reply. Yes, the terminology used is called ‘P1 Prep course’. So if your child’s school already has taken care of it, then fine. -

It is admirable that you and your DH are not uptight about your DD being in the best school, being the best student etc. Very refreshing to find parents who accept their children as they are. I was also happy to read about 4th uni. I hope we will have enough $$ to send our kids overseas. Overseas uni will teach them to think much more and to think out of the box.Hi glendt
