Guess the exclusivity is appealing to some?
also your own children can rub shoulder with certain celebrity/politician/uber-richman children!!
it is the parents - looking for bragging rights -

yeah, agree that exclusivity is appealing to some... because the harder to reach, then the more some people will want it? -

Hence I do not understand what is all the fuss and hype about getting into an elite school, can someone enlighten?

fundamentally all of them are the same, curriculum are approved by MOE, books are approved by SEAB, teachers are approved and trained by MOE / NIE ....all are equal
some are perceived to be more equal due to long illustrious history where prominent people studied there before...(what happened to Telok Kurau English School?) and has strong cultural underpinning, compared with say a newly built / established school with zero history - everything and everyone is new
long history and prominent people connection is a default because in early days, there were not many schools to go to ! and it becomes a cycle these days
those schools set up by clans and churches and missionaries have always focused on academic excellence....but these days, every school has the same access to all necessary information and resources -
If a brand new neighbourhood school were set up, but its Principal and teachers drawn from βeliteβ schools, do you think it would be very popular? I believe so.
I was thinking of SJI International when it was first started. They brought in the Principal and teachers from UWC and instantly SJII had a strong reputation and enrolment.
