Thanks chamonix. How many P3 classes are there in BTPS?

        Hi jtoh,

Currently, there are only 5 classes in P3 this year. Each cohort generally has 5 to 6 classes. By P4, there will be a lot of students transferring out of BTPS, either due to GEP or to more popular schools like Pei Hwa, Nanyang and MGS.

[/quote]Thanks Publica. I think based on those numbers, the percentage of kids getting into GEP from BTPS are about the same as those from the other schools in the Dunearn/BT strech, with probably more from NYPS.

Yes, at P4 there'll be vacancies opening up at NYPS, RGPS, SCGS, MGS etc. Lots of movement then.

The most intake was in year 2006 registered in Btps for 2007 p1. It was abt 9 classes for p1 which is now all promoted to p5 (7 classes now) due to 40 pupils in a class. top 3 classes are the best and the rest the school name it as mixed ability classes.

Prior to its relocation in Dec 2000, BTPS was known as Bukit Batok Primary School (situated at the junction of Jalan Jurong Kechil and Jurong Road). Was told that it used to be a very popular school then. However, with its relocation to its new premises at Lorong Kismis with a new name "BUKIT TIMAH PRIMARY SCHOOL", its popularity has suffered since then.

Few years ago, academics seemed to be the school’s main focus. Soon-to-be P1 students were tested during Orientation and streamed into classes based on their performance. Students in the top 2 classes were given more challenging work. However, such practices were scrapped when I registered my son with the school in 2009. The kids were assigned to their classes randomly. And I believe this was the practice for last year too. Streaming or banding will happen only at the end of P2.

However, parents with children going to BTPS next year, do take note that streaming for Chinese occurs at an earlier stage - after Term 1 of P1. The weaker students will be excused from their classes to join a separate one during Chinese lessons. Nothing to worry about, it’s just an initiative to help the students. If things remain unchanged, there will be an external Chinese Speech and Drama programme from second half of Term 2 onwards.

Maths is not just about textbooks and workbooks, students will also be introduced to Maths Trails and Mental Maths (to be done with parents at home). And if time permits, I believe the teacher will also introduce some IQ Maths (not for my son’s class though).

The school is always looking for non-academic talents. Hence, students are encouraged to join the Brass Symphonia (Band) and Contemporary Dance. For Band, be prepared to put in time and stay with it until P6.

What draws me to BTPS is the teachers’ positive stance towards outpsoken students. This is a personal encounter. During the first week of school, the students were brought around various parts of the compound. At the end of the week, one teacher asked the students if it had been a fun time for them. My dear son spoke up and said aloud that he found nothing fun nor interesting in spending half the time walking round the school compound (they had done it during Orientation) and the other half waiting; it was boring. When my son shared the incident with me, I expected his name to be in all the teachers’ black books. But I was in for a surprise during the Parents-Teachers Meet. Both the English and Chinese Teachers took no offence when sharing the incident with me. They even expressed approval and complimented on his outspokenness. When I conveyed my worries about his outspokenness making him seem arrogant, his English Teacher assured me that he only needed guidance along the way. He even received the Model Pupil badge in Term 2. This is so different from the stories I heard about teachers trying to dumb kids down in schools. I would applaud the school for Character Building.

The only thing I find lacking in BTPS is School Spirit. Perhaps it’s this lack of school spirit and sense of belonging that leads to an outflow of many bright students yearly.

I like the sound of BTPS, chamonix. Warm and encouraging environment for the kids.

Thank you chamonix for sharing. My girl will be attending BTPS next year in p1.

I must confess it was not my first choice school. I wanted MGS as it's a christian school and of its secondary school affliation but no hope to get in there. Was balloted out of chij olqp too. So no choice but to go to BTPS as it's ine of the 4 schools near me.

My DD wanted an all girls' school cos she feelsboys are rough! Think she is abit the 'xiao chie' type 😉 i hope she will be happy in BTPS!
