I believe there are many parents in Singapore that really want to help out with no ulterior motive. These are the ones that the schools would trust more than the once-in-a-lifetime PVs. I know of a few myself - heard from one of how she got the parents support group to implement some kind of a food-cart in school after observing some children who do not have money for buying food during recess. I was very touched by that.
I am curious abt this group of children n will probe further. Instead of just feeding them, maybe ask them to do some simple work to \"earn\" the recess cos if they are really needy kids, they learn the concept they need to make themselves useful to know how to get their next meals... but that is not saying non needy kids do not hv to learn.... if they want the food they also learn to earn it. at least give them a life skill that they know charity is not the way to live.... jmho. of course the observation made by the pv was excellent. -

That's a pretty interesting but radical idea you have there, ks2me. Not sure how it could be logistically carried out without creating a stigma on the children involved. While it is in the spirit of the social democratic society we are in to make sure we earn our places in the community, asking kids to work for food may be stretching this concept a bit. It would help if you can flesh out your idea a bit more in terms of what you think the kids would be expected to do. -
Chief, firstly, I believe by providing food for them specially may already cause the stronger pride kids to feel the stigma...so no matter which way, stigma is unavoidable, then might as well achieve another positive outcome out of it?
There are a few ideas...and here is one of them. I do not think the number of such students are many, that is the assumption of this idea so a few carts can be set up.
1. Provide easy food like cakes, muffins, hotdogs, etc that is easy to serve.
2. Allow these children to help sell to other children as well but limit sale to 10 kids. so that the children \"working\" have time to eat and other children will not see that these grp are provided with free food but helping at the store.
3. The \"wages\" for the sale is food from that cart.
4. They help count money(gd skill to learn) and help pack up/tidy up.
So this can also help other children who want more choices of food and learn how to go q early for limited supply....(start from young)
also, it is not abt not wanting to donate...but based on original approach, the donation for daily supply is expensed off. But based on this new model, if there is some mini profit margin daily, then the expense amt is from the profit and the capital amt that is donated can remain consistent. then there is no headache of always looking for fund raising if suddenly someone decides not to fund this cause anymore and the poor kids suddenly lose their recess again....... maybe I think complicated but I prefer to think longer term solutions..

Thanks for the buy-in. You are going to do the marketing? I may attempt to suggest to our school if I see there is a need.

Of course your idea is yours. Go ahead and see if your school takes it up. Who knows, it might be the start of some entrepreneurship programme for Primary schools :). -

LOL, it's ok, no patent rights...anyway this is no rocket science, anyone can think of it...

For PVs out there, do you think the school prefers "non-working" parents when it comes to choosing PVs?
Do you think that a particular type of contribution would be looked at more favourably to the school, when it comes to choosing PVs?
