How to Teach your kid to focus in class?
-
sean wife:
I hear stories from my colleagues whose kids can sit and do work by themselves since 4 yrs old or even earlier, and I am really envious….at least it means that even if we are at work, they are able to get some work done by themselves…but not my kids who are turning 4 in Sep. They are twins and it has been almost impossible to get both of them to sit down and do work AT THE SAME TIME. Even on a 1-1 basis, they are not that kind that will ‘guai-guai’ sit down and do work…after doing a few questions, will start to say things like there are tired and why so much work etc etc….even for hands-on activities and games, also difficult to sustain their interest for more than say 15 mins.
Actually I think at 4, 15mins seems too much... not sure if they r ready... my boys do only at most 5 mins per activity at that age.. sit down and read 1-2pages, do maths 1-2 pages etc..
I do think parents should sit down with the children to do activities as that's the way to know their learning style, strengths and weaknesses...as the child matures, they will be able to devote more time willingly and also to do work on their own. at such a young age, they are still learning, but to learn, they have to have someone teaching. even when they are practising. When the child is good at something, they will b able to do it on their own then.
Don't fret ya, every child is different, even for twins.. you will be able to find the most suitable way to coach your children when you spend more time with them. :hugs: -
I wonder if there are any dads in this topic?
From the postings that I have read, it sounds really familiar to me and that was what I did when I was around that age as well. It seems to me that most boys behave like that, and yes, don’t fret. It is part and parcel of their learning and discovery stage.
I conduct training from neighbourhood schools to top schools, and almost all the boys that I have seen behave in the same way. These boys are in secondary school.
For a 6 year old, a mind filled with imagination and exploration, to behave in that way is natural, and parents should encourage their discovery and creativity at this stage. Asking them to sit still is killing their natural way of learning. If there is something that they find interesting, they will naturally sit still and focus. If you have not found what interest them, keep finding. And the same goes for adults too. -

My advise is go to the doctor and consult Vitamins or Supplement to enhance his focus on his brain cell.
Sometime lack of this Vitamins intake do effect the body capability which will make your son less focus and more sleepy. Actually alot of area can be effected.
So happy trying. =)) -
DS is on enflax fish oil series.. it didn't help much instead by understanding his learning methods helps him focus better.. i found my ways finally.. i hope other parents will too..
Encouragement, rewards and consequences do help!! -
How about a 6 year old? How to get her to focus? She jumps from topic to topic when she talks and I get complaints from teachers that she will drift on in class all the time.

Hi cheerymummy, my ds is 6yrs old too.. he dont focus on his work.. instead teachers got to constantly remind him to be focus.. i try to encourgage his good behavior more regularly these days..
before any lesson or by the end of the day, i'll go thru a list of right behavior expected..
For example, end of today when i pick DS from his CC i'll have a short chat with teachers to understand what is DS's recent problems.. It could be walking about during lesson, not focusing when teachers are teaching or even refuse to do his homework.. So before bedtime, i'll take a piece of paper and write down what is expected of him the next day together with him in checklist format..
He participates by selecting the color of the color pencils i use to write.. then i tel him.. This paper will be given to the teachers.. he got to behave well and i'll see how many boxes in the checklist his teachers have ticked.. When he behave appropriately (most boxes ticked), i'll ask him to recap did his teachers scolded him frequently or praised him.. which behavior makes him feel good.. he is able to notice the different treatment teachers give him when he behave appropriately and when he behave badly.. So he tries to follow those guided behavior on the checklist..
DS also has the tendency of hoping from 1 topic to another.. what i do is constantly remind him that we are at TOPIC A now.. we can address TOPIC B later after we complete A.. Sometimes they maybe upset when we stop them from going further.. but i'll just explained to him ONE AT A TIME.. i explain to him using this analogy.. When i feed u 1 spoonful of rice can you swallow? his reply is yes.. When i feed u 2 spoonful of rice can you swallow? his reply is no.. then i ask him.. Why no? his reply is because the mouth is full.. I further explain to him.. its the same concept.. our brain hands and eyes can do a thing by a time.. so only after we accomplished task A then we will tackle task B..
Hope my method works for your DD too..

Hi e3nity,
I learn so much from reading your post. Thank you! I will start to try that on my child. :boogie:
