      Joyfulhands,

I send my DS to Berries. I think they have done a pretty good job in getting him to recognise words. However, when it comes to writing, they have cloze passages now and I find some of the words too difficult for a K2 child to write, e.g. li3 mao4.
      So many strokes!
My DD goes to Tien Hsia. She came back from lessons one day, point at the new words taught for that week (常常) & told me she doesn't know what it mean! :faint: Her 听写 for last week is 妹妹的字越写越美。Still manageable at this point.

        Jennifer:
I wrote sth different- light hearted & humorous and I got a A* at PSLE despite a just above avg performance at the sch exams.

I noticed from my elder boy's essay, those scoring high marks are usu. funnier stories or sth unexpected.
I agree... my teachers are always shocked at my results (both PSLE n Os) they believe I prayed very hard :rotflmao: my strategy was to concentrate on content bcos my CL is lousy beyond words  so I still can get a good score using simple chinese words :imanangel:
        Joyfulhands:
Seems like there're a no. of 过来人here who has experienced the same. Did you send your DS to CL or EL enrichment classes?
nope, mommy doing the 'enriching'... I used to worry that my cmi chinese wil be a hindrance in teachin ds.. but CL teacher and my frens teach me to use the textbook religiously, and so far so gd.. not as gd as markfch's ds  .. but very much improved compared to the start of p1. He didn't even know wat the teacher was saying in class... I don have high expectations as his CL 'genetics' not very gd la :rotflmao:
        Scary:
        JoeeYee:

And I saw the MGS thread... only ~15 pages... so I think I might be quite lonely there... 😉

PH thread is the most active. Maybe because PH doesn't have PSG. The parents here are not selfish in sharing. Some parents don't like to share for reasons we all know.

For MGS, my fren's child is there.. alot of activities to engage parents... decorating classroom everyterm.. PE/cca parents are invited to volunteer.. for my fren, she meet the other parents in sch so often, they set up their own facebook grp

I find that the words taught at MGS are just as difficult as PH... but PH has a better system to teach CL... my fren's child came back with spelling list, can write, but cannot understand... my ds cannot recall the words on the list (poor memory), but when I refer to his textbk, he can tell me what was taught in class to help him understand.. 😉

That's already very good, at least to me. My boy won't be able to write half of the sentence.

Actually I am unsure if I should worry about him not able to write well. I am more focused on his words recognition currently.

Actually Mommy's brand of enrichment is the best! I would love to devote more time to coach my kids but alas.. my work can get demanding at times.. I felt that there're many resources ie books, materials etc out there, but what is lacking is my time & energy 🤷

Though I am a SAHM, I also find a lack in time and energy. DS comes home only late afternoon. By the time he finishes dinner, it's already close to 7pm. Only left with max.2 hrs to coach him. By this time, I am actually as tired as him. Furthermore, he likes to day-dream and talks non-stop. Thus, efficiency is less than an hr.

ds1 came back from swim class one day and asked me if it's true next year we are all going to die!? :yikes: ... 2012 is the last year for Earth?! :nailbite: ... why so unfair, mummy gets to live till so old (hmm, :scratchhead: ) but he needs to die when only 8yr old... sob sob  ... he still have so many activities not tried/places not visited/toys not bought yet.... sob sob :gloomy: ....

I told him might be true, might be not true.... if it's true, then he better do everything fast and well now so no need to waste time repeating.... if not true, then it's a bonus and he gets even more time to do other things... 😓

Yes, PH thread is the most active thread :rahrah:
I've got 2 feet in different 'boats'...most of the parents here know 😉 . I guess it's not that parents in other school threads do not share...but they are just not as active as us here.

I only get 2 hours a day with them, have to cramp study n play n bonding with 2 boys.. not easy... I set a timetable to ensure I cover every subj in a week, and Sat, I reserve it for 'teaching'. ds is v tired in the evenings, no point killing myself tryin to get him to learn anything. After he finishes his homework, I get him to read his chinese text books or do Eng flash cards. (all the spelling words etc) cannot afford to slack now that he is in P1... Just focus on his weak spots and tackle one each day... once it becomes routine, it will be easier... now my ds can tell me which topics he wants to revise bcos he is not confident, so we can use the time more effectively..

After bath, lunch and a 5 min rest, it's close to 3pm by the time they start doing school hw...by 330pm, my son in P5 is tired and needs his beauty sleep. I have a time-table for both of them but it's quite hard to revise all subjects for younger one (P1), esp with summative tests every 10 weeks. I don't want to kill myself over her grades...there is a LONG LONG way to go. We will just revise what we can.

my sons have gone thru 2 tuition teachers. both said the CL standard/expectation in PH is very high....even higher than Nanyang. they taught Nanyang students before, so they know.
