Do you check and correct your child's homework?
-
It’s the final stretch to the PSLE and my son is loaded with assessment papers from school and the tuition. I was wondering whether do you check your child’s homework, and if you spot any mistakes, do you point them out, or would you leave it to the teacher to point them out?
I used to go through his homework religiously when he was in lower primary. Now that he is in P6, some of the homework is quite difficult. On top of that, after coming home from work, my brain is in shutdown mode already, so sometimes I just don’t feel like going through his work quite so thoroughly. Maybe just a flip and glance to make sure he has done his work. -
My daughter is also in P6 this year and she also has tonnes of homework. What I normally do is
1) address any burning questions she has and she cannot wait for teachers to go through
2) address any questions that she doesnt understand despite teachers’ explanation
3) spot any trend of mistakes such as careless mistakes and remind her of the strategies she had learnt to deal with such mistakes.
4) if there’s any time and energy left, may go through such practice questions together -
I will not correct dd’s homework but leave it to the teacher to mark. This is to allow the teacher to "be aware " of whether she understands and address it. However, I will take note of her mistakes and let her tutor know and for reinforcement.(if no tutor, I suppose I will have to do this myself !). Meanwhile, I also choose “more exercises” (from past year papers) of the same type for her to practice to strengthen her understanding.
