Vicky and Jane were given a certain amount of money to spend. If Vicky spent $90 and Jane spent $30, Vicky would have $100 left when Jane had spent all her money. If Vicky spent $30 and Jane spent $90, Vicky would have $580 left when Jane had spent all her money, Find the total amount of money given to Vicky and Jane.

spending ratio when Jane spent $90:
Jane : Vicky = 90: 30 = 3u : 1u, Vicky had $580 left

spending ratio when Jane spent $30:
Jane : Vicky = 30 : 90 = 3u : 9u, Vicky had $100 left

so total amount Vicky had = 1u + $580 = 9u + $100
8u = $480, 1u = $60

Total amount of money = 4u + $ 580 (or 12u + $100) = $820

2)Ben, Rachel and Willy had 8.61 kg of modeling clay altogether. Ben gave Rachel 0.54kg of clay, Rachel gave Willy 0.21 clay and Willy gave Ben 0.37kg of clay. Ben then had twice as much clay as Rachel and Rachel had twice as much clay as Willy. How much clay did Willy have at first?

For Q2, try working backwards.. in the end, Ben would have 4 units, Rachel 2 units and Willy 1 unit. So, in the end Ben would have 4/7 x 8.61 kg = 4.92 kg and so forth, then work backwards.. give it a try

First, find the ratio of the number of coins :
20cent : 50 cent = 2: 1
50cent : $1 = 3 : 5

So, ratio of number of coins - 20cent : 50cent : $1 = 6 : 3 : 5
ratio of value of coins - 20cent : 50cent : $1
= 6 x 2u : 3 x 5u : 5 x 10u
= 12u : 15u : 50u, total 77u

77u = $23.10, 1u = $0.30

Number of coins:
20 cent = 12 x 0.30 /0.20 = 18
50 cent = 15 x 0.30/0.50 = 9
$1 = 50 x 0.30/1= 15

Total number of coins = 18 + 9 + 15 = 42
