      Hi augmum

      Thank you for sharing.

Would need your advise is 'Simultaneous Concept' simialr to algebra?

I notice DD is also using simultaneous equation (I heard her mentioned) when sovling some problem sums.

      u're welcome, brenda.
yes, simultaneous equations is under Algebra, they are sets of equations containing multiple variables.....
juz by forming algebraic equations w/o knowing how to solve them simultaneously, is of no use.....
(unless, that Q is asked to form algebraic expressions)

actually for simple ones, schools do teach them using simultaneous equations
by substituting the variables with pictures......easier for kids to visualise

Thank you augmum for your explanation. šŸ˜‚

I will presume in Secondary school they will have to learn more of algebra!

So have some basis knowlege of simultaneuous does help!

I need to check something with experienced parents and parents who are good in Maths.

My child was marked wrong for a question in the prelim papers although the answer was correct. Teacher said it was due to the method used.

Would like to check, in PSLE, is method an important factor? Will the same thing happen as above as in a different method or working (or probably not the one they are looking for?) but answer correct and will still mark it as wrong, not even a single mark will be given?
what method did yr child use ??

oh yes....algebra in secondary school is much tougher than juz doing simultaneous equations......

fyi, in sec school, pupils are not allowed to use models to solve for the Q.....
it is even stated black and white in some exam papers, \" No model drawing is allowed\".......
so how can MOE possibly not to acknowledge algebra as one of the solving method ??...... šŸ˜‰

So far, my ds has been using more algebra than model and his teacher says it's fine. So I think it's true can use any method so long as it leads to the correct answer. I've also attended the math workshop for parents - the guy there also said no need to use one particular method - he said it's better to use one method to do and use another method to check. If answers by using the 2 different methods the same, then likely answer is correct. My ds also prefers to use algebra, he said it's faster. šŸ™‚

yes, my gal told me that she used Algebra for at least 4 Qs for her PSLE 2009 Maths paper.....(that killer maths paper šŸ˜“ )
partically for 1 Q , first, she tried using model drawing,
but she encountered some problems with it......
she then cancelled the whole working and replaced it by algebra, within minutes her answer was out.....
for those kids who can grasp algebra concepts well, using algebra approach is much faster.....

oh yes, remember \"to confine\" yr 1 st working to the first half of the page,
so as u will have enough space for the 2nd working........

That's some sound advice...will ask my ds to do that. Thanks!

Told my Gal the Same ....
Prelim she can Make ALL the Mistakes she Wants To, But Not to Repeat in PSLE ....
My Gal Can't Finish Her MAths Paper as Well, with 3 Section C left Uncompleted .... And Poof Goes 15 Marks!

But think It's a Good Wake up Call, coz now she Seriously is Aware of So Many More Ways Q can Be Asked that she May Not be Able to get the Ans within the time Frame, and ....
May Spur her to be more compliant when Mummy Say, \" Why Don't U Try some More Past Year papers ....?\"
                šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜‰

I think Math is different with the other three subjects and it has to practice more regularly to build up the sharpness, accuracy, speed and also get more exposure to various types of questions that can be asked in many ways! :scared:

There is still 5 weeks to go and let's us Jiayou together!!!

My GAl is ALL Smile Today ....
Coz Today's Sc Prelim is Not as Tough as She Feared, and Last Paper!

Agree on your Point on Maths, Guess We Have To Fast-Hand-Fast-Leg go Get this year Maths Prelim Papers
                Jiayou !
(But after this Long Weekend Break -hor .... šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜‰ )

                  Hi sista Funx3,

Perhaps this year will be like 2007 and 2009 as I just read the thread unde PSLE T-score!

                  http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=7110

very difficult math, easy Chinese and some tricky Science questions.

As such, most of the school may also set the papers according to the pattern.

I wish your dd good luck and all the best for today Science prelim paper! :rahrah:

Can go for the nice lunch after the exam! :boogie:

I am curious to know, for maths qns, your kids usually use algebra tp solve or model ?.. My ds said he likes to use algebra to solve unless the qn stated to use model.. But he said they will not be asked to use only a particular method to solve such as model. Is tt right?

My Gal say as Long as Can GEt Ans .... Correctly, of Course with Working shown, Algebra or Model Mtd, Both Can be Accepted by her T
