      S'citizen:
      One observation from the result.

pro-white: 35% (consist of very old citizen or pp vote out of habit)
      pro-opposition: 30%
      swing vote:35%
Just curious, are all the civil servants oblige to vote for the whites? If so they form quite a substantial figure.. That means large percentage of citizens are actually voting against TT.

And the data to back this assertion? Or is it just speculation? I know of pretty smart people who will gag a voting for the oppo on the basis of such comments.

No obligation nor arm twisting. But some people choose to believe that they are obliged to.

            ksi:
When CNN was having a dialogue with the NUS research expert, they were toying with ideas and one of them was if the 2 candidates' votes were very close, possibly they could do another rounds of final election to determine who would really be the best man for the job. So.......is that ever possible? The second idea in the discussion was the runner's up get to work closely with the winner.... Anyone heard that?

Top 2 candidates going for final run-off occurs in several countries.

Think they will come up with more safety nets for themselves in the coming GE. There are so many pple working for the gahment, plus those govt-link co..guess it will be very difficult for the oppo to win too many seats....

When the miw crafted the current constitution for the PE, if you recall, there was a huge uproar from the public that the g’ment was institutionalising YET another mechanism for staying in power. So it somewhat amuses me that there are people now citing imminent threats to the reserves that TT is in place. Whatever his faults, I don’t see how he will do worse than any of the candidates. After all, he was for a long while, a part of the team that BUILT the reserves in the first place.

On to the mechanics of the PE. I believe very strongly that a run off in case of any candidate (if more than 2 candidates) does not garner more than 50% of the popular vote is critical. It will do away with the suspicion of the PEC, and give any elected President a clearer mandate. Right now, fairly or not, TT will have to deal with the fact that he has just little over a third of the popular vote.

Last, I am really concerned about the direction the discussions have taken with regard to the mother tongue abilities of the candidates. I fear that unless something changes, from this point on, minority candidates no longer stand a chance of being elected as President, if the thinking has now descended to the communal level. This is one of the drawbacks of the PEC now having more public accountability, and that is the inability to ‘steer’ the slate of candidates, helping minorities along the way.

Pandora’s box is opened, as it needed to be, now to deal with the demons that emerge.

False assumption. Some civil servants were pretty open about voting for the oppostion at the last GE.

Singaporeans are very unique. We seem to be able to accept whatever that comes along, as long as there are explanations (whether they sound convincing or not is another matter), and as long as it will ensure 'stability'.

You tell Singaporeans the people in power are paid so many millions of dollars, they go :yikes: , you tell them it is their money they go :stompfeet: but when it comes to voting, they go :nailbite: - better don't rock the boat, else end up like Taiwan :nosebleed:

One of the major concerns of MNCs is political stability. Singapore is bent on this advantage - but at the cost of its people. The divide is caused by the people who created it in the first place, yet we continue to hub on stability. STABILITY OF WHAT? Stability of having bigger cracks to balance on lest we become the ones to fall through? I can yet find my own resolution.

Yup I do believe some may still go ahead to vote for a non-pap, it may be just a small percentage of the whole grp of them. Anyway it's just my assumption, really! 😄

From my surrounding n understanding, most civil servant will vote with brain rather than heart cos they still suspect voting is not secret. I do have example here. So, TCB has the heart of those vote for him, I sincerely doubt so for TT.
