i did a last min booking though the hotel reception… rented the car Avis. Just filled up the form at the reception, they fax for me… next morning, they deliver the car to mine hotel carpark. Almost brand New toyota corolla, think ard $50-60 per day. inculded basic insurance. but i top up some $$ for the enchance insurance. i got the car at Rotorua and return it at Taupo. Need to pay addtional 20 to 40 if u are returing at diff location… So from Taupo, i took Air NZ back to Auck intl airport.

We're going to New Zealand too, in Nov. Got the good offers from Jetstar few weeks ago. Our main focus is North Island. Found that there're quite many places that are interesting. Here's our plan...


Auckland-> Miranda Shore Bird Reserve-> Coromandel

Coromandel, Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove, Water Park-> Rotorua

Rotorua-> Taupo

Taupo -> Taranaki area

Taranaki-> Waitomo area

Waitomo-> Auckland

Bay of Island is beautiful. If time doesn't allow, there are beautiful islands around Auckland too. Waiheki is a more well developed destination. Can reach these islands by ferry from Auckland.

We'll rent a car there. The map we got from NZ embassy is somehow useful. There are indication of scenic highway routes in different theme. We have 7 nights. Still wondering where's the best place to stay/stop over on the way back from Taranaki to Auckland. Want to find out which side of the Taranaki National Park is the most scenic too. Any comment? I am planning to visit Rotorua and Waitamo in the North Island. For those who has visited the Agrodome, did you go for the farm tour in addition to the sheep shearing show? If you do, does the farm tour includes visiting the fruit orchards? Did anyone visited the Rainbow Springs & Kiwi Encounter in Rotorua? Any comments?


I am wondering if it is worth visiting the other caves in Waitamo in addition to the famous Glowworm Cave. Any advise?

I am also think only Christchurch is badly damaged. Other places are best. Therefore, I feel that New Zealand is now best place for holiday travel. There are many things are there to see and to do. So, enjoy your holiday in New Zealand.

Bay Islands will already be Day 5 or 6 depending on hown many nights you stay. You may want to do a day tour but if I were you, I would stay overnight as the beaches are lovely and your kids can catch the dolphins or do snorkeling etc. The resorts there are lovely too.

- where did you stay ?
- what are the activities you did there ?
- Is it worth the $$ and time to take a cruise to see Hole in the Rock ?
- Did you visit Waitangi Treaty Grounds ?

Strangely, when I check trip advisor, there aren't a lot of activities. Wonder why.....

Went for Hole in the Rock cruise when we went to Bay of Islands. We saw dolphins along the way, it was scenic and we took lots of pictures of the hole in the rock but I felt it was just scenic, felt like a waste of time. My kids would have preferred more ‘exciting’ stuff.
