for those ad hoc volunteers, there are some orphanages in singapore which you can write to and explain that you would like to visit them. my friend once a year will buy some gifts around xmas time and visit the orphanage with her family and distribute gifts and food to share with the children there....very meaningful and her kids love to share and help out.... can consider... 🙂

Sometimes got to be mindful of the situation where the kids volunteer though. At an orphanage, it might bring about sad memories for the orphans when they see the children coming with their parents. This was highlighted to me when I also asked if I can bring my own kids to help out at a company charity event. At an old folks home should be no prob.

I wanted to bring my kids to give gifts at Chen Su Lan Methodist home before. The staff did tell me that they preferred that my kids not hand out the gifts as the children at the orphanage feel bad that they do not have their parents with them and then they see happy kids with their parents and they have so much, they can even give away gifts, it would make the children at the orphanage feel worse instead of better. So in the end, we went to an old folks home instead.

All in all, I believe that exposing children to charity work is a good experience for them. It teaches them a lot of different values that cannot be normally taught. I would also bring my kids in future to volunteer as well. It also bonds the family closer as well. 🙂 Good job to all the mummies who bring their kids to charity work. 🙂

My kids volunteer in the school’s buddy reading program. You may wish to check with the school if there is any mentoring program. I know another school where a weaker student will be mentored by 2 academically stronger students. I personally think it is a very good idea.

I was sourcing for such exposure for my dd but to no avail.

                      - She loves pet and I thought of getting her to volunteer to walk pet dogs but she is too young to be accepted.
                      - She could read quite well and I explored for her to serve in the "reading to kids" in public library but again she is too young for that.
                      - she is also too young for reading to the children’s home etc.
