Is the Pen E-P3 what's known as a hybrid camera? Can some kind soul explain what are the pros and cons of a hybrid camera?

We need to replace our dinosaur point and shoot. Unlikely that we'll be getting a DSLR. Thanks

By hybrid.. I suppose you are referring to the mirrorless \"technology\"?

A mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (MILC) is an emerging class of digital system cameras, intermediate between compact digital cameras and digital single-lens reflex cameras (DSLRs). They are characterized by large sensors (the same size as entry-level DSLRs), no mirror, and interchangeable lenses, as the name suggests, and provide DSLR-quality pictures in a significantly smaller camera. Alternative names include: Mirrorless System Camera (MSC), Compact System Camera (CSC), Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM), micro camera, Digital Interchangeable-Lens System camera, or Electronic Viewfinder with Interchangeable Lens (EVIL).

Am looking for something that is less complicated and expensive than the DSLR but one that can take fast-action shots (sporting events?), panorama, far and near shots, etc....Thought I read somewhere that a hybrid camera has such functions.

Oh dear.... sounds like I want it all and must be affordable too. Haha... living up to my kiasuparent name

Wow if you can build up this collection it will be very valuable in future... In that it is something that money will not be able to buy as these old buildings are making way for newer and modern designed architecture.

The Olympus E-PL1 is the first generation of Micro Four Thirds camera from Olympus.
The current version is E-PL3, which is $998

if you're just starting out, E-PL1 is good enough to play around with and get familiar with the system. It's weak point is in slow focusing. This is not an issue in most cases, except if you're planning on sports photography, or candids. Still a very good camera at that price point. Just remember to budget another $1500 for additional lens and batteries. So, don't spend too much on the body.

Or you can get a Sony NEX C3 for $1099

The Sony camer has a slightly bigger sensor than the Olympus and this gives you a better picture in low light situations. The down side of the Sony is that they don't have as many lenses to offer as the Olympus. The Sony also has in camera Panorama stitching, which means you can take Panoramic pictures easily by just pressing the shutter button and sweeping the camera around. The Olympus does not have this feature and you need to stitch the pics in a photo editor software. If I were to take a lot of Panoramic pics, I'll take the Sony NEX system anytime. A lot less hassle. The NEX lens are larger and heavier than the Olympus lens, not as light or portable as the Olympus.

They each have their pros and cons. You have to decide what kind of pics you would normally take. If you take a lot of pics indoors with available light, then the Sony camera would give you better quality. Take a trip to Suntec city and check out the cameras. Feel it in your hands and see which feels right. Best do it before the exhibition ends on 4 Sep.

Thanks for the great reviews from cimman and ZacK ~ i'm taking notes too kekeke..

as pointed out, the focusing of the olympus e-p1 is a little slow but it's still manageable as i do use it to take candids of my kids.. i don't use it for sports shots tho.

Need some advice here.. i'm thinking of getting a CPL filter for my E-P1. is it ok to keep the CPL on the camera all the time even when taking photos under light situations which actually do NOT need a CPL? thanks in advance ~

(ps. question arised because it seems very troublesome to have to remove / put on the CPL filter frequently.. wonder if i can just keep it on all the time as a kind of protective filter..? )
