My kids' piano teacher charges $260 per 4 lessons of 45mins each for Grade 6. Besides, she is entitled to 6 'days' of paid holiday per year. ie. no lesson but payable.

I am paying the same rate for both kids (G5 and G8) which is $300 for each child, 4 lessons of 1 hour (to come to my place).

            We travel to teacher's house.

$200 for grade 4 practical / grade 3 theory 4 lessons of 45 minutes. Sort of a pro-rate fee between grade 3 & 4 because dd still stuck at grade 3 theory 😓

Does your teacher cover theory within the 45 minutes lesson?
I'm wondering whether I should send dd for separate theory lesson. Maybe can progress better

I'm paying S$240/4lessons for my ds' violin lessons SSO teacher. That being said, it's same whether it's grade 1 or LRSM. haha. It's the teacher's time. Theory is done separately on his own with another teacher, for which we pay S$140 for grade 6-8 theory.

Just noticed lesson is for 1 hour. In that case, fees seems very reasonable especially for your grade 8 child. If pro-rate to 45 minutes it will be $225 per 4 lessons.

For grade 8, I think dd's teacher is charging $300+ for 45 minutes :faint: No theory & need to travel to teacher's house.

Have you tried group theory lessons in music school? Fees substantially cheaper.
Or more advisable to go for individual theory lesson?

By the way, I pm you the other day regarding strings teacher's attributes.

Higher grade theory advisable to go for one for one. Or group lesson of not more than 4 or 5 per class. The concepts are a lot harder and each student need much more attention in class compared to the lower grades.

Looking at this thread, I realise I undercharge my fees lol, but nevermind, teaching piano is more than just about the money.

What's your fees for grade 4? And grade 5?
                      Lesson include theory?

                        Lesson include theory?

I actually charge 20 $ base charge + (5$ per grade) for one hour practical lesson. So grade 8 works out at 60$ per lesson and grade 5 will be $45 per lesson. Now the reason I charge this is because last time my diploma teachers only charged me 80$ per lesson, and I feel that it is disrespect to charge more than people who have higher qualifications and more established than me.

As for theory, I normally only prepare students for grade 5 theory onwards. As grade 5 encompass all that is taught from grade 1-4, I feel one exam for grade 5 is enough. Then after that spend another 2 years to prepare for grade 8 theory. For beginners I encourage them to take grade 5 theory ASAP unless they are very young children then I will teach them the lower grade theories first. Some teachers I know prepare grade 3 and 5 theory and then the grade 6-8 one per year. But rarely teachers will ask students to take all the grades in theory exam. Most established teachers teach grade 5 theory and above separately. Some teachers who are very good in practical do not teach theory at all, they will ask you to go for outside theory lesson. The reverse is true, some teachers specialise in theory but do not teach practical.
