          Dear Uncle tianzhu,

Pls refer to the above picture - Henry Park Primary School 2011 P6 Prelim Maths Paper 2 Q10 - 3 marks that ck123 was talking about. Thks for your attention in this matter.

          Hi VC and ck123

There are two different shades of colour in the image.

I think the student may have coloured some parts which are not included in the original question.

          http://i56.tinypic.com/25uhzpy.png

Just making a guess on the shaded portion.

I am using 3.142 as pi as I don’t have my boy’s calculator with me.

          Area of circle --- 3.142*36 ----- 113.11
          113.11/2 ------- 56.55
          56.55 - 36 ----- 20.55

          Area of square -----12*12 ------144
          144/2 ------72
          72 – 20.55 ----- 51.45

          (144 – 113.11)/4 ------ 7.72

          51.45 – 7.72 ------ 43.73

          Best wishes

          Hi,

          Both parts are shaded.

The area of the smaller part is: (36 - 6 pi) cm2.

              Answer given: (b) ~83.91 cm

Pls wait for Uncle tianzhu / MathIzzzFun to provide worked solutions.
              Thks.
Thanks Tianzhu for the solution. Maybe this might be easier, as I coundn't figure out the rotation myself... :?

Given the 135 degree, angle ODB = 45 degree.
If you draw a line joining OT, angle OTE = 45 degree (half of 90 degree of square) . This straight away give OT = DB.
And the rest of the calculation applies..[/quote]
I don't understand why OT = DB as T is a region and not a point.
              Thank-you.

                      Hi

I believe students are comfortable with working out the area of square when its diagonal is known.

I’ll leave it to students to work out the calculations in details.

                      Hope this helps.

                      Best wishes
