Hi Publica
Hi Mindboggled,Mindboggled:
He's on the O level track so far, but hoping to switch to IB. He isn't taking a third language. I think it really boils down to the CCAs. For example, if you are doing shooting or canoeing, and are training for medal etc.. then you could be doing CCA training five times a week!
As for kids in IB program, I don't think they have a significantly higher workload but that could also depend on the individual.
Also ACSI is an IB school, so if you intend to send your DS there, then you join the IB programme.
May I know what is the criteria to switch from the O level track to the IB programme?
Currently, there are a few criteria - HAST test (if PSLE score was below 250, unless your average after Year 1 is 80% or above, not necessary), personal statement (different questions which you can choose from), CCA and academic performance. As a rule of thumb, if your average is 70% or more, you should be able to get in. However, the HAST test, if your DS has to sit for it, is a must to clear. -

Hi Uncle Lim
From what I see, once you're in a school team, the training is pretty intense for the sport CCAs. Rugby (once season starts), canoeing, shooting. Generally the non killer CCAs are the ones the school does not really excel in, and therefore less pressure. -

Ah... ok. So I guess water polo is another killer then. :faint: But at least the pool is in the school and there will be no travelling to external venues...UncleLim:

For CCA, uniform group usually have once-a-week training on Fridays, but I believe BB & Scouts train on Saturdays. Some weeks have no training, but they have courses and/or camps during the holidays. So far 2 to 3X a year, ranging from 1 to 3 days. Quite manageble. Sports training at least 2X a week, much more if boy in school team. But those in school team can write in to stick to one CCA.
3rd language. Malay is held in ACSI so very convenient and it’s once a week. Other languages are held in Ghim Moh language centre which is not far from Dover. I believe these used to be twice weekly sessions 2 years ago but you may want to verify with MOE whether this is still true. My experience is that many students, not just ACSI students, drop 3rd lang after 1st year 'cos of the travelling (even with school bus) & heavy workload from other subjects.
But you never know, just try out first and see how the boy copes. -
There’s no MOELC at Ghim Moh anymore. It’s at Newton now.

Oic sorry for wrong info abt Ghim Moh language centre. DS takes Malay which is in school.
