Can someone help me with the following question. Thank you.

Tammy and Sharon have some money. If Tammy spent $60 each day and Sharon spent $30 each day, Tammy is left with $400 when Sharon spent all her money. If Sharon spent $60 each day and Tammy spent $30 each day, Tammy is left with $1150 when Sharon spent all her money. How much money do the two girls have?
Hi

Spending ratio when tammy spent $30/day and Sharon spent $60/day,
Tammy : Sharon = 1u : 2u

Spending ratio when Tammy spent $60/day and Sharon spent $30/day,
Tammy : Sharon = 2: 1 = 4u : 2u (Sharon spent same amount of money)

Total amount Tammy had = 1u + 1150 = 4u + 400,
3u=750, 1u = 250

Tammy = 250 + 1150 = 1400
Sharon = 2u = 500

They had $1900 in all - Tammy had $1400 & Sharon had $500

cheers.

cheers.

Hi MathIzzzFun

:thankyou:

I think I have misunderstood the question. I thought the amount of money Sharon has must be able to divide by both $60 n $30. Similarly, after minus either $400 or $1150, I thought the amount of money Tammy had also be able to divide by $30 n $60 too.

Btw, there is a typo error.

Tammy = 250 + 1150 = 1400

So total they had $1900 in all.
😄

Hi

As in any question on the topic of Speed, it’s always helpful to start with a simple diagram.

Points to note are:
• 1)To exclude rest time from the duration, only consider the time travelling on the road.

2)For a common distance, speed and time are inversely proportional. Consider you are going to RWS from your house .You are in the car travelling along the expressway. The faster the speed of the car, you’ll reach RWS in a shorter time. In the calculations, just inverse the speed ratio.
•
I’ll attempt to translate the question from words into picture, hope it’ll help students to see it better. I’ll leave students to put in the details as required in the calculations.

Speed is an intimidating topic in PSLE Maths, some students dread to see them.

Start with a simple diagram, put in the information bit by bit, apply logical reasoning and you’re on the way to the exciting rides in the park.

Enjoy your Mid- Autumn Festival or Lantern Festival. Have your moon cakes and carry your colourful lanterns. Have fun.

Best wishes

Hi

A quick one for Q16.

You may use MD or UM.

Adila ----- 100 units
Michelle ------ 160 units
Usha ----- 104 units (35% fewer than M)

M and A gave some cards to U in the ratio 3:1

U ---- 1.5*104 ----- 156
Increase in number of units ----156 -104 -----52

M -----39 units
A -----13 units

In the end

M ------ 160 – 39 ------121 units
A ------ 100 -13 ------ 87 units

121 – 87 ----- 34
34 units ------238
1 unit ------ 7

M gave (39*7) or 273 cards to U.

Best wishes

Dear Tianzhu,
Can u explain in more detail how to get answer (a) 4:3;
Hi

A student needs to recognise that the bars showing the number of boys and girls are of different kind and measure.

MD is a neat way of solving such question.

As usual I’ve drawn more MD than necessary to show the flow of events. Once a student becomes more familiar with such questions, he may consolidate some of the steps.

All the best for PSLE 2011.

Best wishes
