Hi MintyMin,
You mentioned before that your DD is attending K1 Maths at MathsHub. Can you share more on how the class is conducted and what are the activities covered? Is there teaching involved or kids do their own activities?

Glad to find you here too! I know from the MPM thread that your DS is in Jelic. Actually I have shared my grouses on the thread 2 months back about my kid’s jelic teacher….
1)\tThe teacher always busy organizing the worksheets at the side of the class, instead of guiding or checking the kids work. Kids have to wait for their answers to be checked, and sometimes I have seen the kids just move on the booklet without waiting for the answers to be checked.
2)\tAfter kid finished the worksheet for the 1st box, the teacher came, checked, walked away but didn’t gave kid the booklet to choose the 2nd box. End up the kid was just fiddling with the paper for like 5-10 minutes before she choose the 2nd box. Time and $$$ wasted is one thing, killing the interest of the child is a greater concern, especially when my kid suddenly says she doesn’t like jelic and find jelic boring…
3)\tI find one of the worksheet answer given by kid is wrong, but teacher didn’t do correction.
4)\tI also find one of the box which my kid just did had been done 3 months back….either the teacher gave her the wrong book to choose stickers or my kid took the wrong box but teacher didn’t know or bother to change.
Thought of complaining to the centre owner, but scared of repercussions…like purposing let my kid wait even longer to check answers or in between activities, or not providing guidance when they are stuck, and end up, she can say the kid cannot do, thus only finished 1 box or 2 boxes for the day…I know it’s supposed to be self-learning, but how fast the kid can move really depends on how much support the teacher gives to…I mean if the kid is stuck, you cannot let him keep on trying and trying for the whole lesson, and then at the end of the lesson, tell the parent he has difficulty and thus took the whole lesson right??
Actually I like the materials a lot, but the above really makes my blood boil…. -

Even I am teaching my DD at home; after returning from work. Her kindy is little slow (I feel) when I compare the others. -

Frankly, i haf nvr seat in or really stay ard to c hw the class is conducted.. but previously when my DD1 is only wif a small class of 4, the teacher do go round guiding them and there's also a teacher asst in class to assist the teacher too.. but i haf juz changed my DD to another slot and there are more kids in there.. as to hw much attn given to each kid to guide.. m not sure.. but i do noe.. if majority can't do, they will guide using the whiteboard.. they do oragami, shapes, sizes, subtractions and additions.. each week, for 1.5hrs, they will finish at least 4pages of wrksheets..
For their K1 age.. or even N2 age.. some dun really ask qns or say they do not know hw to do.. till they are being asked by teacher.. unless they are very outspoken.. whh is the case for my DD initially.. but now she is ok to ask.. n she might b the youngest in class..
Hw do i noe if she learn.. well.. at hm they love to use those leaflets to fold planes, cars, etc.. so tis way.. we get them to fold half.. n ask if both halves are the same.. etc.. my DD noes shapes, wat matches wat.. n when u ask her to count she noes.. subtractions at times a bit slow coz distracted.. simple ones.. she noes.. i dun expect much frm her.. most impt is she has interest to attend the class.. if she dun.. i wont hesitate to stop her from going..

Hi libran269, tatz gd.. but y do u feel that her kindy is a little slow? Wat is ur benchmark to get that feel? Weirdly.. as we only changed DD1's over to PCF in July.. he also feel tat PCF's teaching not as enriching for DD1.. therefore considering to put her back to the CC where both my DS and DD2 is at now.. but for me.. i c not lack in her knowledge of tings n hw she is able to read n all.. :? :scratchhead:
Jiayou! I noe hw tiring it is to teach after wrk.. I haven't started on DD1 yet as my priority now is to get my DS to recognise sight words easily n read w/o problem.. as much as DD1 always asking if she'll b nxt once i have finish with DS.. but i m super tired to continue wif her usually.. though i do let her do assessment books as requested by her if i haf the energy to guide her through.. if not will b simple book reading..

I compared with kids going to MMIs and PCF. I am just keeping a watch as I dont any unpleasant surprises in the end..when in K2

Xactly as what you have said, young kids may not voice out that they need help and if they get stuck for too long, or wait too long for teacher to come around, high chance they will lose the interest. I do see my kid always call ‘teacher’ when she needs help or need teacher to check answer, but I can see that she gets bored when she has to wait and wait….of course, we can say that learning to wait for their turn is part of the learning process, but why delay her from moving on to the 2nd box activity after she is done with the 1st box activity?? I find it quite poor thing lor, especially when I see my kid try to look for her booklet herself so that she can find the sticker for the 2nd box…to be fair, my kid is not the best well-behaved kid with the longest attention span and fastest learner, in fact, she has been uncooperative at times, which make me all the more worried that if I feedback to the centre owner, the teacher will purposely make things even more difficult for her, and in turn, she becomes even more uncooperative….
That’s why thinking of alternatives now…. -
i haven enroll DD in any maths enrichment yet… cos dunno which one is good… will stop shichida after Dec this year… after that thinking of drama and speech at act3… any good maths enrichment to recommend ?

At mathshub.. so far for my case.. i do let teacher noe hw talkative my DS is.. n what he is weak in.. n Hw my DD1 require a lot of attention, so haf to let her do someting once she finishes if not she will keep calling out for u.. tat kind.. but of coz.. having said tat.. kids do not usually behave the same in front of teachers n in front of us.. but communication with teacher is the key to helping our kids learn.. tatz wat i feel..
I tink it is impt for u to let the teacher noe abt tis.. n m sure they will tell u they will try their best to do wat they can best for ur kid..

Actually this kind of self-learning program is quite subjective in terms of how the teacher handles the class….she did feedback that my younger one more focused, my older one more playful and less focused, which I agree and I recommend the teacher to be more stern with them, blar blar blar…I just stop short of telling her can I take over the materials and guide them myself, hahaaa……she is the 2nd teacher they have since beginning of this year, and I find the first teacher so much better….actually this kind of feeling about teacher very hard to explain, but I am glad you get what I mean…
Which branch of mathshub your kids are at? Any teacher to recommend??

Actually most maths enrichment can be classified into a few categories, and you can read from the maths enrichment thread, but all boils down to the teacher…having been through different classes, I really feel getting a good teacher (or one which gels with the kid) is just like getting a good maid, heng suay one……different kids need different kinds of teachers, but usually our instinct can tell us whether the child can bond with the teacher and vice versa…
