I know what you mean, I've asked dh to speak in only chinese with my boys, and he is really struggling very hard.. very often I have to interpret for my in-laws or anyone else when they speak in Chinese to my boys too...
To improve his oral, I have decided to communicate with ds using Chinese alone. Needless to say, all was quiet during dinner. My spoken Chinese all came out as 'one-piece, one-piece.' (must translate to Hokkien)
I ever asked my boy to speak in Chinese with his frens (like ur ds markfch  ) n he asked me:' You crazy huh? What to say?!'

Thanks for the support, periwinklejoy. With only one child, I don't really have that much experience in parenthood. Most of the time, I just base on gut-feel. I want ds to do well academically. I want ds to be happy. I'm greedy, I want both, haha.
hi Mark its great u listen to d inner voice of yr ds. Its tough right for us? On one hand we want to help make d best decision poss for our child but on d other hand we also want him/ her hv a say prior to makg any decision.periwinklejoy:
Glad to hear your dd is so mature (to keep her promise). Is the younger one still at the enrichment we were sharing earlier?I had to make a decision to let my elder one stop one of her enrichment last time, n d agreemt was she cld keep off tt enrichm as long she cld maintain her grades in dat related subj. She was ok until d followg yr n she herself agreed to sign up though in a diff centre. Now she is happier n self-driven in prepg for d class n doing hw for dat subj prior to each lesson. So dependg on d type of kids and their maturity level, its good to respect our kids' opinions n keep options open. I was glad that i gave my dd d option though my hub was v agst her droppg out of tt. N i was glad i had some \"terms\" laid out so she wld naturally experience d consequences of her actions n make her decision on her own.

We watch very little TV programmes at home. He used to watch εηΎηΎδΈη°ε€ͺηΌ & Doremon when younger. Don't think I can get ds to sit down quietly and watch Chinese programmes nowadays. That plus everything is spoken in English at home, no wonder ds can't speak Chinese well. Can't really blame him.Mark, hv u tried to let yr ds watch \"Ah Yo Yo Lao Shi\" cds? My elder dd loved it wen she was young n i tink its quite educational

Side track a bit. I allowed ds to play computer games since young (to me it's not a lot but others really considered it a lot based on the feedback I got in this PH thread). I used to think that as long as his grades are good, I've no problem with him gaming on-line. Then recently, I got an unexpected call at night from his T, telling me about the dangers about excessive gaming. How come she knows?
I can sense the determination in her voice that ds must reduce game time. That night onwards, gaming time was immediately slashed by half. DS knows from my tone that certain things I say are non-negotiable.
That's why I consider ds very fortunate to be in a sch like PH to educate him.Mrsbongz:
If our kids can only communicate in Chinese, then they will understand the phrase 'Silence is golden.'I ever asked my boy to speak in Chinese with his frens (like ur ds markfch  ) n he asked me:' You crazy huh? What to say?!'

Yes, it certainly takes time getting use to communicating solely in Chinese, for both of us. But I'm determined that ds cannot get that kind of grades for oral again in Berries.
Well, better late than never. -

DW being financially more savvy, is in charge of all money matters. She's the one who made the payment. Thank u everyone! Was hoping to increase his study time as he doesn't have enrichment, n i will like he to improve. But when he complained, i was worried abt pushing him too hard. Having all ur feedback is good for me to have a gauge. Thank u!!
Some pushing is good.
My elder boy who was pushed earlier in his lower pri days was able to go auto-pilot in upper pri days. Even now in sec sch, I hv no need to worry for him. He was given 7 pcs of sch assignments over the weekends and he told my hubby that he has them all covered.
I dunno if this has got to do with blood group. Typically Type A pple are more independent and sensible. Unfortunately, my P4 boy is not a Type A person- always doing last min work :faint:
My boy n me both blood type A leh.. He probably has not reach my expectation of being \"automatic\" when comes to homework..
he will do his work independently but that is after me nagging and calling him fr work...

Wat abt watching the Chinese news with the kids? My hubby sometimes will ask Ds to sit n watch the Chinese news together n would wan Ds to read along the chinese words on screen if possible ...he keeps telling Ds that if he wan to improve his Chinese..this is one way ... For me, I still read Chinese magazines and papers to improve on my Chinese and would ask Ds to look thru with me sometimes too. But when Ds see Chinese words only,he usually yawn or run away.. :slapshead: I know he soccer crazy so I get him to read soccer news in Chinese lor..
