Wat abt watching the Chinese news with the kids? My hubby sometimes will ask Ds to sit n watch the Chinese news together n would wan Ds to read along the chinese words on screen if possible ...he keeps telling Ds that if he wan to improve his Chinese..this is one way ... For me, I still read Chinese magazines and papers to improve on my Chinese and would ask Ds to look thru with me sometimes too. But when Ds see Chinese words only,he usually yawn or run away.. :slapshead: I know he soccer crazy so I get him to read soccer news in Chinese lor..
I Watch Chinese HK Drama Serials with My Gal ....
Regular from 8pm to 10.30pm on weekdays ....
This is our Sessions to :
1) Learn to Speak Mandarin,
2) Learn Chen-Yu/Yen-Yu,
3) Learn Plots of Thousand-and-One ways for Murder/treachery/Law Suit/Police and Thief/Undercover Cops/BGR/Marriage/Divorced/Birth/Teenage Rebellion/Death ....
And Even things like Cookery Tips/Beauty Tips/Slimming Tips ....
4) Learn how to Crack jokes and Poke Fun thru Mis-Use of Chen-Yu, etc ....
5) Learn to use plots from the Drama shows in Compo (when Really Run Dry for Ideas) ....
And I Guess that is how My Gal find it Still Easy-Going in her HCL Banding Class 1 ....

thanks for the tips! my boy only likes to watch animal planet and cartoons.. have tried getting chinese dvds like Xi Yang Yang, 1000 whys? but they just yawn and ask how much longer before they can watch their own cartoons :frustrated: ... I may try the news but I myself have difficulty understanding :oops: what they r saying, n will have to translate to my boys thru out...
We don rally have time to watch tv too.. we get home at 7.15pm, finish dinner, and it's homework time. They only watch half hour each night, havin to choose only 1 cartoon, so it is quite precious to them. They need to sleep by 9.30pm as Mommy has to leave for work early in the morning.
My sons seemed to have a switch that switches off their hearing when the language is not in English... sometimes the grandparents have to shout their names several times before the kids respond. :gloomy: very embarrassing when they are perceived as being insolent..
Funx3, desperate times call for desperate measures!! hahaha... if u set up shop, plenty of PH here will buy!!

I can more or less understand what you mean…my fren also facing the same issues as u… she cannot read moch chinese herself so cannot help her gals much…but I told her if u wan your kids to do well…u have to put in your best effort to show them that they are not alone …I learnt maths all over again and still working on assessment books and papers to show my boy that maths can be tough sometimes but never give up cos mummy didn’t! I did managed to help him out quite a bit in his hw along the way…so Dun gve up! Whenever u can, speak in mandarin, be it broken mandarin…at least u tried your v best… the more u do it, the better u are…if the ang mohs can do it…all the more we shd do better at our mother tongue! -

I think we don’t post all the time. But when we do post, it’s fast and furious. Haha.
This week ds has quite a bit of homework - 3 copies of 好朋友, 6 pages of Chinese text to memorise (liang chi?), one English essay, one informal piano test by piano T on Sat, on top of the work I give him daily. When ds is busy … implies I’m busy too so not much time to post.
Side track a bit. One of my distant relatives married a foreigner and their eldest is in P1 now in a neighbourhood sch. My relative is those super busy with work type and his wife (being unfamilar to the system here) thought that her kid can begin learning proper in P1. She didn’t prepare her child in any way. Recently she was complaining that her kid is now scoring all below average grades in school; and blaming herself for it. -
even Neighbourhood Sch is Not spared ....
