No sooner has the striker scored a goal than the referee blew the whistle.
Please advise if my dd's answer is acceptable.
Anyone can explain why answer key is \"blown\" instead of \"blew\" for the option (2)?

For option 2, it should be 'blew'.

Your dd's answer is incorrect. Should be past perfect 'had ... scored'.

The answer in the key is slightly different -- No sooner had the striker scored a goal than the referee blown the whistle.

Would appreciate if I could get help on this.

Btw - the Rosyth answer key that gave the wrong answer looked like the 'official' answer key used by the teachers for marking (as it contained several alternative answers). Even 'top schools' are not infallible I guess. :evil:

Both are wrong as they ignore parallelism, that is you should have the same grammatical units. In both answers, 'prefers' is followed by infinitive+noun whereas 'to' is followed by a noun.

Should be:
Sarah prefers law to medicine.
Sarah prefers to study law rather than to study medicine.
