Hi, need help for this question in CA2.

Q). Danny had $156 more than Esther. After Danny had spent 1/6 of his money and Esther spent 1/2 of her money, Danny had $245 more than Esther. How much money did Danny have at first?

        Thanks!

              Hi

              Is this a P5 question ?? Looks more like a P6 one..

              The Nth term = N^2 + (N-1)^2

              So, figure 8 = 8x8 + 7x7 = 113

              481/2 = 240.5 -- nearest square number is 15^2 and 16^2

              15 x 15 + 16 x 16 = 225 + 256 = 481

So, Figure 16 will have 481 buttons.

              cheers.

Many thank again for your prompt reply MathIzzzFun. It was given by the school teacher. As my DS and I are weak in this type of question, can you please give us some clue or method to get the Nth term?

                  Hi

It is useful to get acquainted with square numbers as these are often needed in solving number patterns. Square numbers are 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 etc. so one needs to recognize say 81, 64, 121as square numbers, and 3, 8, 15, 24 etc as associated with square numbers since 3+1 =4 = 2x2, 8+1=9 = 3x3, 15+1=16= 4x4, 24+1 = 25= 5x5. Another common type of numbers are triangular numbers - 1, 1+2, 1+2+3, 1+2+3+4, etc.

For this question, we have to see figure 2 as 4 + 1 = 2x2 +1. For figure 3, there are 3 buttons on each outer edge, so look for a 3 x 3 square and see what remains - in this case, when you remove the 3x3 square pattern from Figure 3, what is left is a 2x2 square pattern.. so Figure 3 = 3x3+ 2x2..voila .. we have the Nth term = NxN + (N-1) x (N-1)

                  cheers.

Thanks MathIzzzFun. You really save my day. Your model drawing and solution is very clear and my son can understand once he looks at it. Once again, thank-you!

                      Cheers 🙂
