What do you mean by they wouldn't have made it past Year 2? Are they retained and made to repeat Year 2?turquoise:
I was told by someone in NUSH that the first two years are rather relaxed and the kids really enjoy the syllabus. The pressure kicks in in Year 3 and some of the weaker kids have problems coping.
Well, that depends on your definition of the term \"weaker kids\". If you refer to students who have been scoring pretty low in Years 1 and 2, then they can consult teachers or classmates or study by themselves. If, on the other hand, you refer to students who cannot understand basic concepts or theorems, I don't think they would have made it past Year 2.
However, as I am only in Year 2, I cannot speak from experience yet. The paragraph above was based on conclusions drawn from observation and questioning of fellow schoolmates. For personal experience, I can only provide it from next year. If you feel like this: :stupid: then sorry but there's nothing else I can do for now.
Cheers,
Holyaxile
btw, I'm not asking for your experience, so there's no need for you to apologize. -
I’m not really sure but they need to be VERY bad in studies to be retained. So I don’t think you need to worry about that. What I meant was, if the concepts are too hard, I marvel that he could get past Year 2 because he would not understand a word the teachers said. That’s all.

One friend of mine, who is a senior, expressed the opinion that those year 5s that an earlier poster mentioned are probably those who only take 2 majors, the bare minimum.
"Those year 5s who said they are slack, let them take a few honours, olympiad training, and a good ARP before they dare to say they are slack." -
I will be hazarding a guess that the senior you mentioned either has no idea what stress is at all or has a very low stress threshold. I consider myself to have an extremely high stress threshold because I recall playing a LOT the day before my PSLE. Most of my Year 5 friends can cope pretty well with their work, as I have said. Perhaps your friend is in the minority of the cohort?

May I know what is your definition for \"coping well\"? From what i know, in my friend's definitions it means \"completing all your work and pass your tests BUT SLEEP AT 2-3 am everyday, waking up at 5-7am\" which from what i heard applies to most people in the year 5 cohort, and I suspect that all the workload have a LOT more stress than your PSLE, especially with the Olympiads and research projects some of them are having. For high achievers, there are not even weekends for them from what i observed, which is what happens in other top schools in Singapore. May i know if those friends of yours are the minority of the cohort? -
I am an NUS high school student in Year 2. What Olympiads and ARPs do year 5s go for? What does ARP even stand for?
-
ARP is Advance Research Project in their school with attachments with outside agencies like NUS, NTU, A*STAR, DSTA and some hospitals, and is their graduation requirement to complete an ARP during their year 5 or 6 and most will enter their projects into SSEF. From what i heard about those projects, they usually span around 6 to 9 monthes of research.
Im not very sure about the olympiads they have there, but they should have Bio, Chem, Math and Physics olympiads for the top or really interested students. -
Hm…well, somehow I doubt the aim of the school is to grant only 3~5 hours of sleep a day so I’m guessing many people are wasting time and/or procrastinating with their work. NUS High is actually rather slack compared to what I heard from friends in schools like RI and ACS(I). But heck, I give up. If u insist NUS High is a high-stress school, go ahead.
Cheers,

holyaxile, have you considered transferring to other school since you think that NUSH is so slack for extremely high stress threshold person like you? Maybe you can be more involved in IMO training etc? By the way, did you get accepted by NUSH via DSA?

Hi Merlion,
Why be so hard on him? He is just a Sec 2 child.
