Could anyone explain why the pain is pronounced and not substantial ? I searched the dictionary but still could not understand .
Substantial means enough to support while pronounced means strongly marked -

Questions like permutating deceiving to deceptive; transforming past perfect in the S&T to simple past; collocating pain with pronounced, etc... are all rather tricky... SEAB seems to be upping the ante...
For example.
Question; Jane asked David, \"Did you do your homework?\" (Simple Past)
Ans: Jane asked David if he had done his homework. (Past Perfect)
So if we reverse the question:
Jane asked David if he had done his homework (Past Perfect)
Jane asked David, \"Have you done your homework?\" (Present perfect - very awkward tense to use without context.)
Jane asked David, \"Did you do your homework?\" (Simple Past - a better choice for answer.) -

I dont think date is needed as that is an informal email and date is only required in formal letter and do not need to write 'Re:' . I'm not confirmed , this is based on what my teacher told me . She said ‘Re:' is no longer needed as the format has changed .
DS said the same -- for informal email go straight to Dear xxx. His teacher said \"Re\" and \"date\" are not required.
they will not give any marks is it -

Honestly, I don't have a easy way to explain this... Its more about collocation I believe. At the same time I would usually use the adj substantial to describe something tangible or quantifiable, in this case I would feel that using substantial to describe pain would be rather awkward... -
Heard my students discussing, to pick object at/in/by/? random? Most of them put "at random".

I checked the dictionary. It is "at random".

So \"at random\" should be correct. Some students put \"in random\" as answer. -

Ds teacher said it is ok to write date even for informal email. -
Sorry, why the sentence cannot be "What puzzled the detective was that the witnesses suddenly disappeared."
