      Hi smartmummy!

Initially, I let my dd add to let her understand the concept, eg. 2 X 3 = 2 + 2 + 2 = 6. Then I would give her "pop quizes" to test her, like when we’re eating, on the way to school, shopping, etc. Then, got her to memorise 5 times table (all multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5), and 10 (all multiples end in 0). Then to memorise the squares of all the nembers to 12. She sometimes adds the rest, or sometimes memorise the ones she comes across more often.
      Then there’s the "fun" of times tables, eg. 9 times table (all multiples have digits that add up to 9, eg. 9 X 3 = 27 … 2 is one less than 3, 2 + 7 = 9). Or 7 X 6 = 6 X 7. Every number multiplied bu 5 is half of that number multiplied by 10 (.eg. 3 X 5 = half of 3 X 10). Then the concept that 3 X 10 = 3 X 2 X 5 etc.
      She’s preety good at it.
I feel that its important that the child gets the basic concepts right and not make them memorise math working. To me, while its possible to memorise all the facts that’s tested in PSLE, its not possible to do it for A Levels - unless the students also understands the underlying concepts. And certainly, its impossible to swallow and regurgitate in University.
      Hope this helps.

        Hi Laura02!.

        Thank you for ur tips.
Upto now I am ok with skip counting. But before SA2 I think he need to memorise cos of it taking too long and he tired to do Maths.cos a lot of qns need multiplications .Like fraction, division. If he memorise (multiplication table only not maths concepts) then easy to do maths. His friend memorised in P1.He got 98 for maths.

            Hi Tresille,
My DD1 has finished her oral on the 2nd week of this term 😄

I use the handout given by both her language teachers to practice with her. I have the following at home and went thru with her during the Sept holiday but only for one-two topic...can't commend whether good or not but just some form of practises 😉
