I wrote to SEAB abt the use of correction tapes- discouraged but allowed. I guess it is "use at your own risk".

As for e-dict and calculator, a pupil can bring > 1 e-dict/calculator as long as the gadget is in the allowed lists.

This is what I advised all my students:

        - If you write something wrong, cancel NEATLY with PENCIL.
        - If what you've written is really messy, draw a box neatly around it and cross it out IN PENCIL.
        - Do not use correction tape and write over it. If you really need to use correction tape, it should only be to cover up messes, not to write new answers over it.

Main reason for cancelling in pencil is in case they change their minds and want their original answers. They do not spend time rewriting, just need to erase their cancellation. Very useful for Maths 🙂

Thanks Artbeacoup for sharing the details & Jennifer for yr confirmation w/ SEAB. Guess I will ask my boy not to bring any correction-tape or he will be tempted to use it. Kids nowadys depend too much on the correction-tape that they don't think carefully b4 they write. 😉

I checked with my girl (had PSLE last year) and she said, correction tapes are not allowed in PSLE. This was what the teachers told them and they did not use it during PSLE.

In the first place, are students supose to use pen or pencil in PSLE, or both allowed ? my son’s sci teacher told them that they will need to use pencil.

2B pencil only for that shading of the circles on the OAS ( Optical Answer Sheet ). The rest in pen. If your son is still unsure, get him to ask the teacher again.

Looks like parents and kids are all preparing the stationery for PSLE.

My son’s teachers pooled their money and got the kids a psle survival pack for childrens’ day…so sweet of them… with 2b pencil, erasers, ruler, pencil case, protractor…plus notes of encouragements. So thoughtful of them.

Too drastic not to bring? What if he really runs out of free space to write new set of workings/answers?

I read this from another forum, a mom wrote to MOE to ask and this is MOE's reply. Hope it helps.

                        *************************************************************
We would like to clarify that the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) discourages the use of correction fluid/tape in the PSLE exams to safeguard the interests of pupils.

Based on our past experience, the SEAB found that the use of correction fluid/tape can affect the performance of pupils and the legibility of their scripts.

                        Examples of these include:

·Pupils forgetting to write in their answers after applying correction fluid because they went on to answer other questions while waiting for the correction fluid to dry.

·Pupils spending time waiting for the correction fluid to dry or reapplying correction tape to mask their original answers, before proceeding to answer other questions. This results in some loss of time.

·Pupils writing answers when the correction fluid is still moist, thus rendering their answers illegible.

·Correction fluid adhering to the opposite face of the answer script, causing answers on the opposite face to be smudged.

·Correction tape causing opposite faces of the answer script to be stuck to each other. Separating these pages during marking could cause damage to the scripts and hence affect the legibility of answers.

With regard to the use of correction fluid/tape in schools, we would like to clarify that pupils are engaged in a variety of writing activities in their daily work where the use of correction fluid/tape may be appropriate. However, this is a decision that is best decided by the school.

We would encourage parents to contact the relevant school for further clarification on the decision made by the respective school. The contact details of all schools may be obtained from: http://www.moe.gov.sg/schdiv/sis/

We hope the above clarifies. Should you have any further enquiries, please quote the following reference number : 2009/08/967190 when you email me at [email protected]. Alternatively, you may also speak with our Customer Service Executives at 6872-2220.
