All About Delayed Speech

Does yr child hv motor problems as well? Signs of motor problems would be general clumsiness, knocking onto people or things, or maybe even late in walking (eg 15 months or later). If yes, it is quite worrying esp with lack of pointing (which shows lack of joint attention). Motor skill problems and lack of joint attention are quite common in kids with ASD. -

He’s at kkh speech therapy. U can get a referral from polyclinic. The sessions that really helped him was the intensive weekly ones and we practiced everyday. After that he could pronounce better. Yes, u should also get him assessed becoz he isn’t pointing and not talking. My son has been given a prelimary assessment of high functioning autism. He has improved tremendously over the years so I think maybe he may just ‘fail’ the upcoming psychology test. We did all the speech and occupational therapies before we decided to send him in for further assessment. Early invention helps a lot becoz then u know exactly how to teach him to speak properly. -
audvis-my son only started walking at 17mths. den my MIL said is normal since my hubby walked at 16mths. does genes apply? we call his name he dun reply, my dad even asked me does my son has hearing problems which i doubt so because everytime we call him to eat he run to us.
mashy-can get referal from GP instead of polyclinic? -
Hi mummyjune
I am not sure what impact genes hv on walking, but from your description I would be worried. U can get referral from GP too but u will be treated as private patient, if I’m not wrong. You will pay higher fees for consultation, therapy (if needed) etc but it is possible your waiting time will be shorter than subsidized patient. -

If u go polyclinic then can be subsidized patient. Therapy is a long haul thing so unless u are well to do, u may wanna go thru subsidy route. Only the first appt takes a bit longer but since your son is still young, can wait a little. Once assessed the appts will be closer. Like this whole month of oct, we are seeing the speech therapy once a week.
Since he doesn’t respond, all the more u should. First they will check hearing. Hearing may also affect speech. If hearing is cleared then will need for further assessment. -

thank u for yr advises. i will discuss with my hubby, he was also telling me better bring our son for checkup. i think better dun wait any longer.
just to check, if i go polyclinic, also must queue as usual? or can go straight to a certain department?
can i also check, the subsidy is how much? -
The polyclinic will refer u to see the KKH/ NUH medical doctor first. From there the dr will refer u to CDU doctor who sees kids with developmental problems. Be prepared to wait though. That time, I waited 2 months. Can’t remember exactly the subsidy, I think it is 50%.

for polyclinic, do i make appointment through phone or do i walk-in? -
Mummyjune
It’s 50% subsidy. So can save a lot. And if u go subsidy route, they will still fix the therapist for u so won’t anyhow change unless u want to change or the needs have changed. -
if can obtain referal letter via polyclinic already, 1st visit consultation to KKH roughly costs how much ? how about subsequent visits $ ?
which one is cheaper - go KKH or NUH ?
