it is not philosophy about making money. it is about balancing the books without going bankrupt

      Bankrupt?

More like fattening the books to bloat the pockets..

Talk about SGD$200mil being \"too little\" and \"not enough\" in some recent news and SGD$600k being \"peanuts\" in older news.. and one can see what I'm talking about..

It's not that the business is not viable.. but the profit is not enuff to satisfy the greed..

Of coz we can't say for sure for each individual cases w/o more information/facts.. but in most cases, I believe paying a little more w/o increasing the charges/fees will not put the company into the red.

PS: I'm not against foreign workers, althou I don't feel the same for over-supply of foreign PMETs or FTs.

I met a Singaporean Town Council cleaner who cleans my block in Punggol when I was getting home. He told me that foreign workers in his line are paid $400 to $500 per month working from 6 to 6pm six days a week. If Singaporeans have to compete with foreign workers, bite the bullet and accept this kind of long hours job with such low pay, I really think the future of Singapore citizens is very bleak and miserable indeed. Imagine the future where more and more foreigners compete with us in every level and sector of employment. Where do we stand a chance to compete with them if all bosses make cheap labour their top priority when there are more and more foreign workers and talents to choose from? I run student care services for a church for the last ten years. I have not yet come to the point of having to freeze staffs’ annual increment or cut AWS even though I have only raised student fee by a mere 4% in these ten years. And we are still running a profitable business. Employers who are all out to make as much profit as possible simply by squeezing staff’s pay or customers’ pocket are to be frown upon as just greedy human beings without a meaningful sense of purpose for life.

And I seriously hope that the government will continue to moderate the influx of foreign workers and talents to prevent employers from suppressing wages. A government that calls themselves servants of the people as PM Lee exhorts, exists for the people and by the people.

I don't mind the foreign cleaners and service staff who are here to make a better living. They provide good service, and with the right training and attitude, they are a blessing to Singapore, as they are willing to take up certain jobs that Singaporeans are not willing to do. I've met some foreign service staff who are very friendly. I've noticed that more of them are trying to assimilate by learning English. I don't mind if we give some of them PR status. :salute:

Those I don't particularly like, however, are the rich foreigners who come here to buy property, jacking up the prices of housing so much that young couples (like myself and DF) have to work for 30 years before we can pay off the mortgage for our flat. I know it's not their fault, because our government asked them to come, but some of them are only interested in protecting their wealth and property. They're very tight-fisted with their money when it comes to dealing with Singaporeans.

I've met a few foreign parents who, although well-to-do, haggled for lower tuition fees. They want tuition fees that are even lower than the rates that I charge for my local students from less well-to-do families. :yikes: It makes me feel slightly put off when I see a rich FT parent behaving in a miserly fashion and questioning me about the rate like I'm trying to fleece them. My rate is the market rate for full-time grad tutors. If I'm charging them a few dollars extra to cover for transport costs, I tell them so. They should've done their homework and checked the market rate.

There are also some immigrants here who don't show much respect for the locals. Apart from cultural adjustment issues, such as the recent furore over curry, there are many immigrants who criticise Singapore's policies and complain about life here. I once heard two FTs on the train talking about Singapore. One of them said loudly that Singapore is slow and inefficient.

:offtopic: A personal rant. Not too long ago, I was told off by an Australian man for using the lift at the MRT station. He tried to curse me, saying that because I did not take the escalator despite being able-bodied and childless, he hoped I'd never be able to have a child to push in a pram. I did use the lift out of convenience, but at that time, there was no one else waiting for the lift, except for me, the guy, his wife and baby. I even held the lift door open for them. I think that guy was :siao: If I was in another country, I would not be telling off the people there for using the facilities in their country.

In short, immigrants are always welcome, but please show Singaporeans some respect!

any singaporean citizen willing to work at construction work site at $1250 per month plus AWS plus CPF ?
Earlier, when I mentioned $200mil with reference to general biz, you asked which nursing home got $200mil profit.

Then when I used NKF as general example of charity, you questioned since when NKF is nursing home.

Now, nursing home became construction site?

Anyway, let's assume the discussion is on general biz and not specific nursing home or whatever..

            Look at this http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=3317319&highlight=pine+garden

You can either read the whole thread or just the first 2 posts.

This is an example of employers trying to give very low pay and then complain to Govt saying no locals wanna take up the job.
            Thread content, reply from MOM:
\"In addition, feedback from job seekers indicated that the salary package you offered was low ($1000 for Assistant Baker, $900 for Service Crew), considering the requirement to work 10 to 12 hour work days. We note that other small food establishments with job postings during the same time frame were offering salaries of up to $1400 for similar positions and similar work conditions.\"
This is an example of greed.

:goodpost: Or the employers look for employees taking one small amount salary for one job, and ask to do \"rojak\" job scopes... ask to do OT no OT pay.

😢 Later no one want to apply, then say no locals taking up the jobs.

Or they want this and that skills, then say no locals fit the job scope...cannot find locals, so hire FTs.

IMHO, if SMEs cannot afford to pay higher salary or at least a reasonable salary, then hire lesser people.

If cannot survive, then close down :?

Then we must ask why our govt grant so many EP or S-pass, making these cheaper labour an option to employers.
