This is so true !
Ha ha ha....just to share. Initially you dun expect them to clear round 1, but after they clear, the 'secret' hope to clear round 2 will just creep in.....
When DD got the consent form for the 1st round, she almost didnt want to take it - reason : what if i need to change school? I'll miss my friends.
Since we also didnt have any idea about GEP, except that it was very difficult, we told her that the test serves as a good experience. No extra 'revision' for this, in fact just think of it as another 'weekly' test set by your teacher. She agreed.
Good thing we did that, cos in her class only 1 student didnt take it. And in class later, everyone was taking about the test taken. And she was proud that she took the test. Although, she told us after the test, that the paper was tough. No worries as long as you've tried, we told her.
Yesterday, DD came back with the Selection Test form. We were surprised since we didnt prepare her for the 1st round at all, and we dont have the 'luxury' to send her for any tuition either!
We didnt have high hopes of her clearing the 1st round. So now that she's selected for the second round, I cant help but agree that there is this a bit of the 'secret' hope for her to do well ! And she for a change, is looking forward and excited about the Selection Test.
And thats why I ended up in this thread.
Cheers!
:congrats: to you and your dd!
This is exactly what I felt. Haha, just not good in putting them in words like you
My ds2 is contented with clearing round 1....like his kor kor. This is what he said \"mummy, I know I will not make it to the GEP cos' I'm not the gifted type lah. Anyway kor kor also cannot make it in round 2\" My ds1 also kept telling him that that the qn for round 2 is very difficult......but when asked him what is the qn like.........he said he forgotten :scratchhead: -

After all it's a GEP test that's supposed to identify those who are academically gifted and there shouldn't be a need to prepare for the test or to get anxious about it. If you're gifted, you'll be selected. If you're not selected, then GEP is not for you. And if you're not naturally gifted but got selected because you paid big bucks to be trained for the test, then good luck to your kid because it'll be hard-going.
I believe most of our children are clever, the way how parenets and teacher guide them is also important. -

Yes, students who are especially strong in either subject will have high chances to go into GEP. This is the information got from ex-GEP students. He is weak in math and especially strong in english, in reverse, his brother is especially strong in math. Both were in GEP finally. They have their own tuition center called mindstretch.ctct61t:

Interesting comment here. So if one is especially strong in one (e.g. lang / math) he/she still stands a good chance to get into GEP??? Any comment on this?
Thanks for the reply....btw, how good is MSLC for GEP students? Are they relevant and useful???
Mindstretch advertised that quite a number of last year's top students attended their classes. Are they really good? -

I'm not sure the result. I went their free seminar, and spent $10 to bring my DD for the test. Test result is not good. So I give up since then.

Everything written above describes my situation. Didn't expect her to clear Round 1. She even told her teacher that I would be most surprised.
you are probably right. I've never visited any GEP thread in KSP becos I always think GEP is something very remote for dd. But after receiving today's test slip, I actually participated in the thread  .cwc:
Ha ha ha....just to share. Initially you dun expect them to clear round 1, but after they clear, the 'secret' hope to clear round 2 will just creep in.....I went through that twice despite knowing very well that my 2 kids are not the GEP material. But nevertheless, yes, it's a fond memory and a milestone for them.
Encourage the kids, fuel them with hope that anything is possible :snuggles: ....but remember to prepare them mentally
However, I will continue to treat this as a non-issue with dd, just like the first round. My dd is the bo-chap type and is pretty happy to just \"sail\" through her studies. I don't think she understands or care much wrt GEP. She thinks since there is no preparation work to be done, then it's even more no-big-deal as compared to her test/exams.
Personally, I am happy that dd is selected for the next round. But I doubt that dd will clear round 2. Potential no enough
She said she would attempt Round 2 but she would not change schools. She loves her school. I just wished that the school could stretched them a little more. I am proud that she knows what she wants, and is not afraid to attempt new things.
For more info, I clicked on this thread and even participated.
But I have prepared her from day 1 that taking the GEP is unlike other tests ie pass or fail. It is a selection to seive out certain talents. Not being selected does not mean she did not pass. It simply means the skills sets did not match what they are looking for.
From the perspective of a parent, clearing Round 1 is a confirmation that my child is on the right track. -

Yes, \"Right Track\" is the word my Dh like to used

My DD told me, when teacher called her name, she was thinking whet she did wrong, and would be punished. When she saw other students with good records were called at the same time. She knew things were not bad as she imaged. hehe, my DD is a naughty girl.

My view, we can guide the child but shld not spoonfeed them with notes. However, we shld get them to be involved in their studies and when they are involved in their studies, we can be less involve and they are takeover the 'steering wheel' n be in charge of their learning journey.jtoh:

I met a friend recently. Her DD is in GEP, and she is very good in her all subjects. She is always one of top students in her class. My friend told me, they prepare a lot for her study. Even now in her class, most top students are well prepared by their parents. She told me one of top student's parents asked the kids to do P5 exercise when the kid was in P3.
I believe most of our children are clever, the most important is the way how parenets and teacher guide them. I hope I can understand this earlier, so I would not waste a lot time to let my DD to guide herself. -
Tresille:
yes, $10 for each subject. test is for GEP course only.
