Days off for maid
-
I tend to believe that maids who are older in age (40 +) are less likely to bring trouble when they go on off. I could be wrong.

Actually, I am less concerned about her getting pregnant than if she catches some diseases...I give my maid off once a month. anything more she says waste money. That's why Indonesia maid is so different from Philip maid.
Busymom, I think you need to be frank with the maid with boyfriend. Tell her she must use protection. My friend's maid who is also in her thirties got pregnant after going off every Sunday. No choice sent her back .
Erm... a bit difficult to talk as it was DD who went to fiddle with her HP after she accidentally left it in our car...
This maid is a bit stubborn type... furthermore quite new with us, although she has worked quite a long time in Singapore already. -
LOLMum:
That is my worry too... she may not be sleeping around, but hard to say about her boyfriend, right?Busymom:
How does one ensure that? We know one of my maids has a boyfriend, but we don't talk about it... I mean how to talk about safe sex with a woman in her thirties and divorced... :?
show her the rules and regulations as stated by mom about sending pregnant maids home.
if she has a bun in the oven, employer needs to get her out asap and meanwhile, it takes a long long time to get a replacement. so better to have a frank talk with her and ask her to go to dr for advice on birth control. but shucks, if she take pills, the boyfriend might not wear condom and in the end, maid might end up with ai__ which is worse than being pregnant. :faint: -
My maid has 2 off days, then other Sundays, she is off from 9am-3pm to attend church and cell group. She belongs to a group in my church, so we are happy to give her time.
At least these days, MOM dun hold employers responsible for pregnant maids. It was so dumb last time, how can we possibly prevent a full grown adult from having sex if she wants to. Unless we lock her up all the time. Even those who do not have off days can find a way to have a boyfriend if she is so determined. -

Totally agree!! :hi5:
:goodpost:verykiasu2010:
having trust in the maid is one thing
whether the maid is trustworthy is a totally different thing. having trust in the maid does not mean the maid can be trusted
trust is always subject to abuse
if the law is less onerous on the employer, who cares what they do outside as long as don't bring men and diseases back to the work place which is the employer's home -

I think it depends on the individual at the end of the day. If they are happily settled and matured, I think these maids would be ok. But for those who are divorced, how do you tell them that they shouldn't get themselves a boyfriend? Come to think of it, we did ask her initially if she has a boyfriend, but she said no...
She has 2 off days a month, while the other one has one (but we let her go home every year). -
Though we are not responsible for the bond now but we still need to pay the air ticket home and pay for replacement cost with maid agency and pay new insurance is she has worked for more than 8 months. The maid should be paying for all these then they can off every Sunday, who cares.

I give my maid once a week off (I enjoy my once a week privacy) I set my rules right from the start and remind her now and then. She can go out anytime in the morning on Sundays and back by 8.30pm (she’s usually back much early)
I set my rules, i told her -
1. If she’s pregnant, i send her back immediately. She will lose out, no jobs and pregnant and back in Phil. I told her that "Dont be stupid", if the guy is serious about her, the guy will not want to get her into trouble"
2. She can have a boyfriend (heh, we are all humans). But she cannot get pregnant. If she wants to get married. I will give her my blessings but she must tell me first and i will release her.
3. She is not allowed to bring any one back to my home, regardless male or female. I may not know or see BUT truth always stands and neighbours may see and tell me.
Other rules like
- if found to steal, NO 2nd chance. "I dont believe in second chance because i already warn you now". "I will report to police, blacklist you in MOM, and you can never come back to Singapore ever again".
So far so good, it works for all my maids (fingers cross). -
Hi All
Please take note of MOM's requirement for day-off
Employment of Foreign Manpower Act (Chapter 91A)
PART I
CONDITIONS TO BE COMPLIED WITH BY EMPLOYER OF FOREIGN EMPLOYEE WHO IS DOMESTIC WORKER
Clauses
8. Except where the foreign employee is on no-pay leave outside Singapore, the employer shall, regardless of whether there is actual work for the foreign employee, and subject to any written law, pay the foreign employee no less than the fixed salary amount declared in the application for a Work Permit submitted to the Controller.
11. The employer of the foreign employee shall grant the foreign employee —
(a) adequate rest daily; and
(b) rest day(s) in accordance with the terms of the employment contract between them.
You can download the pdf file from MOM website.
The new maid salary for Filo & Indo is now on par at $400. Generally, Filo maids would like to have a day-off while many Indo maids do not want the day-off. For these Indo maids their salary would then be $420 (i.e. $20 to compensate for their day-off)
:xedfingers: -
I am not sure what your point is?
MOM does not stipulate any day off. The text quoted merely says employers are to comply with the contract agreed upon.
So if the employer/employee agree on a "no-day off" in the contract, the employer is complying with ‘regulations’. The contract is drawn up based on the needs of both the employer and employee. Some employers need help almost 24/7; some employees don’t want to leave the house. Every pair is different.
In general, market forces will iron out the less ideal employers. There are no regulations to force employers to give more salary, days off etc but if they are not aware of market conditions, they will simply lose their helper to someone else. That’s all.
