GEP 2011 - Screening & Selection

MandyMummy:
I think he did not want to face his ex schoolmates, so he preferred to start afresh at the new school and most importantly it worked for him. His T-score is way above COP of RI. Once he gained his confidence back, he should be fine.Nebbermind:
[quote=\"MandyMummy\"] I heard there was a case in ds school whereby a GEP student transferred to mainstream because he could not cope and is losing his self confidence and self esteem. However the boy did not choose to go back to his own school, instead he went to another neighborhood school. He gained his confidence, became happier and topped that school in the PSLE.
well, he'll face the same problem if he choose to go to those Top sec schools, but he may be more matured and can handle it better.

That's right! Confidence is the key to success -
In fact for this case, after the release of the PSLE results, the parents and child came back to thank the teachers at the GEP school. The teachers were also very happy for the kid.

for whatever reasons if a GEP child can’t make it want to go back mainstream, perhaps better for the child to go another school start everything afresh (dun know anyone, nobody knows his background) then to return same old school where ex classmates may gossip about him.

last night my DS brought back his notice for 2nd around, 34 out of 42 passed in his class! I noticed the notice from MOE was issued on Sep30th, but don’t know why till yesterday his school just released this news?

Like during our time, there was also a divide between the 'A' and the Poly.
Interesting that your mention this .... it is so true during our time.
But today \"A\" or Poly differentiation is \"blurred\" so people are not so adamant that they have to go to JC.
Maybe MOE and learn from this and adjust the \"rift\" between mainstream and GEP. Currently, most GEP school has the \"twinning\" program. I think the aim is to encourage more interaction between GEP and Mainstream. -

it is up to the parents to nurture their children. If a child behaves in a less than desirable manner, mark the parents' behaviour. Usually it is a mirror image.
Agreed totally, though there are exceptions. -

Can't agree more!

Recently, we met up with an old friend whose 2 sons got into the GEP program in a prestigious boy's school. We were happy for her, and she was very proud of their achievements. When the boys came back home, we were shocked by the language and condescending tone they used on their mother. All the mother did was to acknowledge their coming home, and asked a few routine 'small talk' questions.
Once they were out of earshot, I asked my friend why she allowed her tweens to get away with it. She told me that in school they are taught to speak up for themselves and be confident. They are leaders! She didn't want to contradict what the school is teaching.
:siao:
In this case, I don't fault the school but I pity the misguided parents. Some are so proud and in awe of the program or of their children that they relinquish their parental control ie family values and discipline. I have heard parents say that they themselves would never make the grade. Their children who made the cut are 'smarter' and 'know better'. So who are they to put their children down.
So sad. Most of these children may be smart but they are still children. They may have the brains, but we still need to nurture and guide them. The boys will likely develop into thoughtless and heartless leaders. You heartlanders out there who don't measure up, beware!! :yikes: -
