P3 had been a different year, more work, more stressed. I find that my DS have become easily quick-tempered this year. How do you deal with a 9-yr old when he/she throws tantrums? Do you give time-outs, or take away certain privileges?

how is a 9yo tantrum like?
my boy doesn't throw tantrum. he will just switch off! like a flat battery! nagging and scolding also won't work.
he now realises that i cannot make him do stuff that he does not want to! :yikes:
luckily i had started working on intrinsic motivation...and the feel good factor rather than the 'hard way' (ie eat soft no eat hard!).

My dd does not really throw tantrums but she will show 'black face'. When she
was young, I punished her for doing so, I would take away privileges, and scolded her but explained why it was so important for her to be able to cope with things and not show 'black face'. She understood and now she is much better.

But my ds who is 12 is another matter. Although I did the same thing, he loses his temper easily. So for him, I need to remind him a lot, when he really explodes, I will really explode in the form of the punishment. He feels it the most when we take away his gaming time. And I keep telling him the principles behind having self-control. I hope after a while, he will truly change and I do not need to exert control on him.

DS throws tantrum when he can't get things his way at times. Its not very frequent though. I also use motivation factor to get him do his homework and I try not to nag too much, cos he doesn't listen too. My son also \"eat soft no eat hard\"... To avoid conflicts, sometimes I state my expectations or ground rules ( for e.g, no TV unless homework are all done, go to bed by 9.15pm etc ).
