What if the child still does not know how to write all numbers or letters? Is Kumon suitable? I have seen Kumon books selling outside and saw some worksheets like tracing or drawing patterns and understood from the seller that these are usually for children who have yet to master the skill of writing or know how to write all numbers or letters.

But if that is the case in Kumon centers too, I do not think it is worth spending so much money just to let our children do tracing and drawing when their ccc are already doing so. Please correct me if I am wrong. TIA.

Hi, I’m new to the forum. Looking for advice:

Some parents highly recommend kumon (enrichment for English, maths and Chinese - one stop for all!) for my son, but I am not sure if it will benefit him more?
Currently, I teach him myself at home using assessment books and reading books purchased off the rack. (though I may sound kiasu, but he is free anyways, why not use an hour a day to teach him). He is currently 3, but is able to read (keywords with ladybird level 5, K2 maths assessment books and …).

Can anyone advice if Kumon is recommended or does anyone have any suggestions what enrichment is more suitable?

            Thanks

            BZmum

                Hi Parents,

My girl is in P5 this year. She is weak in Maths & currently in JEI maths for the past 7 months. She doesn’t like to go as she finds the teacher impatient & the teacher also told me that she needs to be prompted on minor issue.

Before joining JEI maths, she was doing one to one tuition but it doesn’t help.

I thought of going back to private tuition and at the same time sending her to Kumon maths. I don’t know whether will it be too late for p5 to join Kumon. Would like to get some feedbacks from parents regarding Kumon.

                THanks.

                  Hi.

My kids were in Kumon math in the kindergarten years.
It laid down a good foundation for them and they have been excelling in Math all these years.
My elder was in kumon math till P2.
The reason for discontinuation was because it does not follow the syllabus.
The technique in answering math questions is very important.

                  I have pm u.

I agree with carebear… i wont recommend Kumon for upper primary esp 1 year away from PSLE. My kids are taking Kumon but they are much younger. Kumon is concerned abt speed & accuracy but not concepts.

Also Kumon has daily homework, this may be added stress for your DD.

You may wish to explore other tuition centres (eg Visible Math/Onsponge/Concept Math - discussed at other threads) or find a good 1-to-1 tutor for her to tackle the areas she is weak at.

Have a friend who is a primary school teacher.

She said one of her pupils did badly in math but in kumon the child was doing very well.
That shows that the pupil has the potential to do well in the mainstream syllabus math if she is guided with the proper techniques.
                        PSLE math require techniques.
Once implanted with the correct way to approach the subject and even the child is not the cream of the crop, he or she can do well.

My kids used to laugh at me for not being able to solve their math questions when in my pri and sec sch days, I used to top my math class  !
