One day I was eating the ngo hiang prawn cracker thingy with bee hoon at a Toa Payoh coffee shop and it cost me $12.50.... :yikes: The stall keeper said it was because of the sotong and the special red sausage which was only a few pieces.

It is so difficult to find food in hawker centers which cost less than $3 for a miserable portion! Not to mention every trip to supermarket cost more than $50 and end up wif so few items!
that's cheap. Our supermarket trip is usually > $100 -
Seriously I feel dat buying from market can b more costly than supermarket purchases, only advantage is freshness.

My Indonesian helper is complaining rice is very expensive now in Indo because of draught. Chaotic weather pattern is going to make life more difficult for many people

Think supermarket trips easily chalk up to few hundreds a month for our small family of 3, excluding diapers & formula milk!piyobaby:

wet market is more expensive but I know the stall holder so well that if I say it is not fresh, I get free replacement, no question asked. it is the 'honour' system
these days I don't pick the item (sea food) -- just let the stall holder pick for me and he will guarantee it, or don't pay. loyalty's little privileges -

So it pays to be loyal! Personally prefer wet market shopping, pretty interesting.piyobaby:
