Q&A - P2 Math

My daughter’s answer is 30 and answer sheet is 36.

Same answer as my DD, also the answer given by the assessment book.
But DD's teacher gave the answer as

b) O, S

Sorry, WCW. Should have made myself clear that we are looking at the letters that formed the word DINOSAUR.

But interestingly, you also gave \"U\" as one of the answers for (a).

So why isn't \"U\" one continuous curved line?

The teacher and WCW use the left brain to solve this.

There is no right and wrong because to me, letters and numbers are conventions which we human set up, as long as they are recognisable, there is no need to go into lines and curves. If we follow strictly writing skills, the way we write should dictate if \"U\" is curve or make up of 2 lines and a curve. We never write \"U\" as 2 lines followed by a curve from writing basics, it would look ugly.....curvy things hardly look ugly...do you agree? :evil: :rotflmao:

Regarding the DINOSAUR question, I emailed the teacher about it, and her reply as follows....(hope she's not a member of KSP.com):


Yes, i knew the answers are different. I saw the answers but dont agree with the answers hence the change, The thing is that the \"U\" listed in the book is made up of 2 straight lines (the sides) and a curve (joining the 2 lines).

I told the class that they have to look at the way the letters are provided in the question. If it is a small letter \"u\" then it might be only curve (for those without the additional straight line on the right). But if its those \"u\" that we normally write (with an additional straight line on the right), then it will be a straight line and a curve.

Also, to determine if its a straight line, they can use a ruler to check.

Letter \"B\" is another confusing one. Like the \"B\" written here, it comprise of 4 straight and 2 curve. But \"B\" can also be written with 1 straight and 1 curve. So they have to look at the way the letter is provided.

Do you have any idea what she is talking about for the words in bold? :roll: B is not found in D I N O S A U R!
And B is not confusing, it's just that we should not be using it to set as a Math question as it can be ambiguous due to different perspectives unless they are prepared to accept multiple answers. The learning objective is to let the children identify straight lines and curve lines, so multiple answers should be fine right? And who is to stop a child from looking at \"B\" with 5 straight lines and 2 curves?? if a child sees things outside the box? Why is 4 straight line and 2 curves more correct? :scratchhead:

In any case, if she can disagree with a published answer key by a well-known publisher, then the question is a BAD one.

This is one thing I hope MOE can provide stricter guidelines to schools and SEAB for exam setters to set exam questions that are thoroughly vet for ambiguity unless multiple answers are acceptable.

‘O’ has no straight parts, but on my keyboard key, the vertical are quite straight. So got straight lines or not??!!

Think I recently came across a p3 math qn with a figure making up of straight and curve-straight lines…my girls stumbled coz coz she donch know if a curve followed by a straight is considered 1 line or 2 lines.
