GEP 2011 - Screening & Selection

Hi all...:)

I'm still quite new into this forum. I feel this is an avenue where all parents can share & learn from one another & even can help to de-stress to a certain extent as it is comforting when u know someone out there is facing the same problem, & is most willing to share their experiences & even provides advices or suggestions.

I dun think my earlier post was offensive in anyway, and I appreciate all responses so far. I wud like to emphasise that it is a genuine case coming from a mother's mouth (my personal friend). I asked her b4 sharing her dd's experience here & she
is ok wif it. She told me yesterday, her dd got the English SA2 result back. She managed to do better this round, but they still hv to wait for the compo, listening compre, oral etc.... & also the final computation of all the 4 terms. All the Best to my friend & her dd.

I disagree. Getting into GEP is not about being lucky. There are lots of highly intelligent and high ability students who get into GEP on their own ability without any training or extra coaching. These are the students GEP is catering for. Not your coached and tikam types. To say that one can get into GEP like a lucky draw is to belittle the system.

It is not my intention to belittle the system. My apologies if it came across that way. I agree that there are many high ability children who breeze through without any intervention.

What I meant was for the many who cleared round 1 but was not selected after round 2, they are smart kids who would do as well if given the chance. There could be other factors at play ie extra coaching for the lucky ones whose parents have deeper pockets, and borderline cutoffs. For those who are selected, don’t assume that they are better than their peers who didnt get in. Just look at the top scorers thriving within the mainstream.

For parents who are concerned with adjustments and keeping pace, I encourage you to let the children try. They may just surprise us.

some GEP has relatively low T-score…230ish~240ish and it’s no surprise why some parents may have thought they got in by luck.


But if u have interacted with them, u will notice that most of them have the ability to grasp higher level concepts, just that they may not be so PSLE-smart.

Hi 25hr mama, Thanks for the sharing. I don't think your friend's DD is bad in English as the GEP English test is pitch at a much higher level. I have seen their paper & it's really much tougher than the mainstream paper. On top of this, the passing mark is 70% so even if she got borderline passed, it does not mean she is no good! Do send my regards to her & all the best, she can do it! Jia you!

Hi don't think too much into it. We are all here to care and share and tease/crack jokes :rotflmao: nothing serious and all of us will meet ppl who do not agree with our comments, juz that Mrs Mata a bit too direct for most of us :nailbite: but after going through some of her other posts in various forums, I gather that she is consistently a very very straight talker. Just want to clarify that 70% is the baseline not the passing mark which is 50%. I have check this with the Math teacher and I think it should be the same as for English too.
