Dunman High School (Junior High)

Augmum:
Is this year paper particularly more difficult than previous year?yes, sec 1maths isnt that tough, but sec2 maths is a big jump fr sec1.
and not to mention that this yr eoy maths paper was a killer to majority of pupils.....
How about other levels and other subjects. Are the papers generally more difficult? -
lovingmum:
I believe the syllabus is tough for these kids. The Maths syllabus incorporates Sec 3 and Sec 4 stuff at year 2... really it is not easy...sometimes i really feel bad for the kids....at 255 psle scores they are supposed to be the top 10% of each cohort, but it does not mean that they will necessarily perform well under any type of school with any type of program...
yes, indeed pity those who are \"being kicked\" to O lvl class....
raising of sch std ??
perhaps as what it is stated in the letter, \" to sieve out those who are not clearly Uni bound\"lovingmum:
i believe there are some variations as diff topics being taught at diff yrthe IP in DHS and that of RV and RGs/Ri and HCi, are they all the same?Augmum, do you have any insight? Besides different computation for GPA, what else is different between them that you are aware of?
lovingmum:
oh......seems like a std reply leh...
My gal's form teacher said that as DHS does not have mid year examinations, some students actually are not used and trained to bear the stress and pressure faced to complete so many questions for Maths within a longer time frame.
that could possibly be one of the reason, but the level of difficulty could be the main reason .....
fyi, gal' s fren had seen HCI maths paper,
commented that their paper seems easier than DHS eoy paper.....
i believe the maths paper is pitched at a higher level...... -
WeiHan:
As pupils are given the past yrs papers for eoy practices, thus they could make comparisons....

for other papers , whether they are more diffcult or not, i am not sure...
but the end result is there is a drop across the board for the eoy GPA. -
daisyt:
daisyt, i went to dig out the sch letter ......
Hi Augmum, really can exclude HCL? But dunman is a SAP school, i thought they should be very concern on HCL grades than exclude? Or are they changing their direction? :?Augmum:
for example, if they donβt do well in HCL, can exclude that for GPA computation ,
unlike in lower sec where one needs to include ALL subj for their GPA.
extract fr it for yr info.....
The computation of GPA will be changed fr L1B5 to L1R5
L1- the better of the first lang which is either language arts or higher chinese
R1- humanities which comprise chinese lit, eng lit, geog n hist
for students who offer more than 1 humanities subj, the better of the 2 will be selected.
R2-R5 - Best 4 remaining weighted subj.
It may include lang arts or higher chinese and the second weighted humanities whichever is not selected for L1 and R1. -
Augmum:
Oh ya, I've forgotten.
sall, have u forgotten the saying fr seniors that sec 1 is a honeymoon period......
yes, sec 1maths isnt that tough, but sec2 maths is a big jump fr sec1.

The Y1 eoy papers in RV were tough too.
Any student got retained in DHS? -
DHS cutoff isnβt 255. For this year sec 3-4, their cutoff were 260. This year sec 2 was 258, this year sec 1 was 257
Then this year could be 256 or 255 since there are moe IP school now??
Maybe back to 260 to maintain the high standard. -
MandyMummy:
The Raffles ones lah. Heard they may review their system because the teachers on JC side are complaining for many years at the appalling standard. May change this year.
So which are the IP schs which do not retain their students?Augmum:
Just to share, some IP schools do not retain students in years 1 - 4. They pushed them up despite their poor grades.
My colleague's son at RI and did badly in year 1 to 4. RI principal told my colleague that her son's results could not even make it to any JC. Not even the most unpopular JC. However, my colleague's son automatically joined RJC despite the poor results. Now already in JC2 and doing \"A\" level this year. No retain and no \"O\" level and yet just join RJC... :?
-
How can the school let him automatically joined RJC? How if he cnt pass his A level?
My gal is in DHS year 4 this year. One of her classmate will be retained due to poor result.
I think is good for her in long run⦠-
bleeze:
Don't they retain students in Year 5 if they don't do well in promos? It'll be interesting to see how the student does at A levels.
