Thanks snow crystal, flower monaster & comfy for ur kind responses, really appreciate. My friend & myself had no idea at all abt Gep b4 our dds go into the programme. Our dd's are not in the same school, hence we communicate & update each other quite often in case we miss out anything. Since I chance upon this forum, hv gained & learnt a lot from experience parents like u & many others. Thank you all for sharing & the encouragement for my friend & her dd.

Hi, just to share the abit about the baseline score. According to one teacher during the PTM, she said that if the child’s score is below/around the baseline line, then most likely need to attend remedial lessons. Don’t know whether any kid that has failed one or more subjects get promoted to next level.

Thanks Comfy, for yr explaination on the baseline. Since the baseline = 70%, and the paper is much tougher than the mainsteam ( assuming 20% harder) , then isn't the baseline score can be as high as 90% using the mainsteam std ? :? Very difficult leh. Wonder how many GEP students will hv to attend the remedial class ? -

as for the baseline, it is just a benchmark to signal which student need to put in more effort...or teachers need to push him harder. -

Well it is hard to say .. Those who always get top in class from p1-3 and got into gep, might end up to be an average students in gep whereas those tt got lower position then him from p1-3 and got into gep might out shine him instead as Ge program will make the truly gifted ones stand out ..comfy:

I would say there's a certain extent of truth about luck. Otherwise, how does one explain why some kids who have been tested gifted (IQ test or Mensa) failed to make it past the second round? ok, better :siam: now.
I disagree. Getting into GEP is not about being lucky. There are lots of highly intelligent and high ability students who get into GEP on their own ability without any training or extra coaching. These are the students GEP is catering for. Not your coached and tikam types. To say that one can get into GEP like a lucky draw is to belittle the system.Mawar:
After reading all the sharing in this thread from parents on the other side of the fence, those still sitting on the fence (ouch!) and those who have made it to the over side (the greener side?), I've come to these conclusions.
That most of the the children who have cleared Round 1, have a fair chance of excelling within the GEP system. Once selected, they just need to adjust mindset and go with a pinch of gungho attitude.
That the 500+ cut-off is just an arbitrary number to accomodate limited resources. The ones who get chosen are a wee bit more lucky than the others. Very much due to extra coaching or just the luck of the draw. It does not necessarily mean that they are 'more clever' because we don't know how reliable the tests are and what they are being trained for.
That those who are given the chance, grab it because the curriculum is fortified and enriched (sounds like baby formula?) and will benefit the child. The only exception is when the child turns it down.
Now like the company's AD&D, sit back and wait for your number to be picked. :xedfingers:
Indeed, if you're one of those who somehow 'got lucky' and got selected to GEP but does not possess the ability to cope with the programme, you'll have a really tough time. I've seen it happen. And the effects of it can be long-lasting. -

Could it be bec the GEP test is not an IQ test per se? It has three elements - English, Math and General Ability.

There are always extraneous factors relating to one's performance in tests that render the validity of most tests less ideal than they ought to be. For example, a particular gifted child may not be doing his/her best due to various reasons such as tiredness, anxiety, sickness, etc. The GEP round 2 tests are pretty intense, 2 papers each day about 2-3 hours per day.

Hence, I prefer to reason that most children with 'gifted' abilities should do well enough to be the top 500, but there will also be some children who 'lost' out due to other possible reasons. A child's performance of a test is at best reflective of his ability as what happens for that particular test on that day. -

So far, those who required to attend remedial lessons have bascially no tuition in that subject. Hence wise parents here, you can draw your own conclusion. All are bright children but result can differ much depending on external 'help' & of course the personality/attitude of the kids.Just4Fun:

Yes, so far in my dd's case, if she obtain around 60+, her mainstream score is around 80+ (or can be low band1). Another reason for poor performance, can be due to teacher (as I have shared earlier in another thread). So bascially for kids without tuition/enrichment/coaching from parents, the teachers are the most important source of learning and this will show in their results.comfy:
